The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. | Essential Job Duties |
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled
Veterinary Technician to join our Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. In this role, you will be at the heart of our clinical operations, providing high-level technical support and ensuring the highest standards of care for our large animal patients.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care & Patient Management
Treatment & Monitoring: Directly responsible for all hourly treatments, patient monitoring, and general husbandry care for equine and farm animal patients. Emergency Response: Provide immediate triage and treatment for emergency caseloads. Veterinary Assistance: Support veterinarians during examinations, medical procedures, animal handling, and restraint. Must be capable of lifting up to 75 lbs and maintaining physical stamina in environments involving hazardous materials, gas anesthetics, and zoonotic diseases. Infectious Disease Control: Rigorously maintain and ensure compliance with all hospital Infectious Disease protocols to ensure patient safety.
Education & Collaboration
Clinical Instruction: Assist in the hands-on teaching of veterinary students, interns, and house officers regarding technical skills and patient care. Communication: Maintain effective communication and collaboration with ancillary services and other hospital departments to ensure seamless patient transitions.
Operational Support
Facility Maintenance: Manage supplies and equipment, including overseeing repair schedules and ensuring all tools are in working order. Administrative Accuracy: Assist with inventory control, supply ordering, and purchasing. Monitor flow sheets for accuracy and ensure all services are billed correctly.
Schedule & Requirements
Availability: Participation in an on-call schedule, weekend rotations, and holiday rotations is required. Expertise: Experience in equine or farm animal handling and medical support is essential.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

| Preferred Qualifications |
Credentials & Clinical Expertise: Licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician (
RVT) in North Carolina, with a preferred background in equine clinical care or tertiary referral/teaching facilities.
Professionalism & Communication: Committed to providing high-quality customer service and maintaining professional, effective communication during emotionally charged or challenging situations.
Teamwork & Problem Solving: Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team, actively participating in problem-solving and leveraging computer/electronic proficiency to advance team goals.
Clinical Judgment & Adaptability: Ability to work independently with sound judgment to ensure patient care, while remaining flexible to work beyond scheduled hours as needed. |
