Job Description:

This is a casual, part-time position (5-8 hours/week) supporting the research and studio operations of a faculty member. The role requires a unique blend of technical ceramic knowledge, physical stamina, and digital skills. The ideal candidate is highly organized, capable of working independently, and committed to maintaining a safe, efficient studio environment.

Compensation: $25.00 per hour Start Date: Late February 2026 End Date: June 1, 2026

Job Responsibilities: The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Technical Studio Support
    • Material Prep: Precisely batching and mixing glazes from raw materials; managing clay reclamation and mixing custom clay bodies.
    • Kiln Operations: Assisting with loading, unloading, and maintenance (shelf scraping and kiln wash application).
    • Packing & Shipping Support: Supporting the careful packing of finished work for transport or exhibition. The assistant will receive specific training on ensuring all pieces are secured for safe handling.
    • Studio Maintenance: Maintaining a clean and organized workspace with a high priority on silica dust management and chemical safety.
  • Digital & Administrative Tasks
    • Documentation: Basic photo editing and file management using Adobe Photoshop.
    • Administration: Organizing research data and studio logs using Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
    • Inventory: Monitoring and reporting levels of raw materials and supplies.

Schedule & Commitment:

  • Hours: 5-8 hours per week.
  • Flexibility: While exact shifts are flexible, the assistant must maintain a consistent schedule to ensure research milestones and studio tasks are met.
  • Duration: This is a 15-week appointment funded through a fixed budget allocation.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ceramics Foundational Knowledge: Prior experience in a professional or academic ceramics setting.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated experience in glaze chemistry (mixing) and clay body preparation.
  • Digital Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft/Google suites and basic working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop; however, candidates who are adaptable and eager to learn new digital skills are encouraged to apply.
  • Health & Safety: Strong understanding of safety protocols regarding hazardous materials and respirator use.
  • Independence: Ability to follow detailed task lists and manage time effectively without constant direct supervision.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and move at least 40 lbs (bags of clay, buckets of glaze, etc.).
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and stand for extended periods in a studio environment.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
