Serves as a resource for patients and health care providers. Responsible for assisting in patient/staff education and support in all aspects of lactation management while working towards successful completion of International Board Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) examination

1. Implements standards of care, policies and procedures for breastfeeding management.

2. Assists in providing ongoing in serviced education for neonatal, obstetric, and pediatric staff to enhance the professional development of nursing staff and facilitate successful lactation management.

3. Assists in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating teaching materials and methods used for antepartum and postpartum breastfeeding teaching, in a one on one consultation or class context.

4. Provides telephone counseling to breastfeeding mothers in the community.

5. Collaborates with physicians, nurses and families to establish and maintain a team approach to promote successful lactation.

6. Evaluates, maintains, and assists with the use of appropriate breastfeeding aids and equipment.

7. Assists in the design and implementation of individualized patient teaching care plans to promote consistent patient care in lactation management.

8. Keeps Lactation Coordinator informed of administrative and clinical matters pertinent to successful breastfeeding management and lactation consultant services.

9. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in basic breastfeeding techniques and the management of uncomplicated breastfeeding problems.

10. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury accident to Manager.

REQUIRED:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as a RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  1. Minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a RN post-orientation or post-residency training.
  2. Certified in American Heart Association's Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
    1. Other REQUIRED cardiopulmonary resuscitation certifications (ACLS, NRP, PALS, etc.) are unit specific. Please refer to the specific clinical unit.
  3. Please refer to the specific clinical unit for additional education, competencies and/or certification required as a condition of employment.
  4. Other REQUIRED RN attributes are unit specific. Please refer to the specific clinical unit.

PREFERRED:

  1. BSN degree
  2. National Certification in Clinical Specialty
  3. Minimum of one (1) year experience in lactation.
