About the Job

Position Overview

The Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center (BMDC) facilitates moving healthcare technology from idea to commercialization. Stakeholders from around the University including M Health Fairview clinicians, research faculty, research staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students come to BMDC for guidance and resources on solving healthcare needs. Some ideas are vague, some are well-formed, some are advanced, and some are in the early stages of development.

The work performed in this position will be for the award "Device to Add Compliance to the Vascular System to Treat Refractory Hypertension due to Aortic Stiffness - Design for Manufacturability." This project will focus on the Design for Manufacturability hurdle for this Class III Device. The goal is to utilize the multitude of resources around the Twin Cities to categorize new concepts for manufacturability in their effectiveness, the risks associated with those methods, and the scalability of the process.

This position is a hybrid working format. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures.

Duties/Responsibilities

100%:

  • Over the course of 12 weeks (60 days), build a pulsatile flow loop for testing mechanical devices.
  • Perform Research and Development (50%) of a novel class III medical device, including manufacturing of the device. The manufacturing of the device will include metalworking, molding, and SLA 3D printing.
  • The testing of the device (30%) will include work with a watertight pulsatile flow loop, data acquisition.
  • Custom MATLAB code, and analysis (20%) of the collected data.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Degree in Biomedical Engineering
  • At least 4 months of COMSOL simulation experience
  • 2.5 years 3D printing with Formlabs printers
  • Cleaning 3D printed balloons
  • Metalworking
  • Machining
  • Molding silicone for use with cells and tissue
  • Biocompatibility studies
  • 2 years working in biosafety labs with human/animal tissue/cells
  • Previous project creating watertight machinery
  • Previous data acquisition
  • Data analysis experience using MATLAB

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with U of MN policies and procedures
  • Experience with startup companies, customer discovery, and highly technical projects
  • Experience and deep knowledge of endothelial and smooth muscle cells, tissue engineering, and biomechanics
  • Seeking research career
  • Publication in the research field of smooth muscle, endothelial cells, or tissue engineering
About the Department

The Bakken Medical Devices Center (BMDC), a unit of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine and part of the College of Science and Engineering and the Medical School, facilitates moving novel medical technologies from ideas to commercialization. BMDC research and development projects originate from clinical faculty with ideas for a new medical device, or from engineering faculty with a new technology, or both.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25/hr for 12 weeks (60 days) from start of appointment; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment; 12 weeks (60 days) from start of appointment

Work Location: Hybrid. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.
