Overview

As a technical expert, the Senior Engineer will perform work in Planning Engineering on a dynamic team that studies, plans, and implements improvements on the distribution and transmission systems to provide safe and reliable power to our customers. This work includes identifying clean energy investments that can defer traditional infrastructure or be paired with lower cost traditional investments to support NY/NJ clean energy goals. The Senior Engineer will perform short- and long-term load forecasting and contingency analysis to identify system needs by applying Design Standards. The Senior Engineer will develop solutions for these needs, such as new substations, transmission projects, distribution improvements, and Non-Wire Alternatives (NWAs). The Senior Engineer will lead or provide support on projects such as the Climate Leadership Community Protection Act (CLCPA), Coordinated Grid Planning Process (CGPP), Distribution System Implementation Plan (DSIP), Long Range Plan (LRP), Energy Master Plan (EMP), and Climate Resiliency. The Senior Engineer will attend industry conferences, participate in NY/NJ JU/EDC meetings, stakeholder meetings and serve on technical committees as required. In addition, will work closely with O&R's Utility of the Future ("UotF") team to assess clean energy technology penetration and program initiatives. The Senior Engineer position will report to the Section Manager of Planning.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Performs and directs forecasting and contingency analysis as part of annual load forecasting, contingency studies, and NWA analysis.
  • Works closely with Distributed Resource Integration group to support NY/NJ clean energy goals and long-term corporate strategies, including LRP, Climate Resiliency plans, NWA, EV studies/projects, and EAM to ensure alignment with state goals.
  • Identifies projects for the electric delivery system ten-year capital infrastructure requirements for Engineering and Electric Operations capital budgets, including reliability and clean energy enabling projects.
  • Develops conceptual designs and supports T&D capital budget system improvement projects, including project white papers, cost/benefit analyses, and project justifications.
  • Provides Distribution load flow program utilization and support, including area studies, modeling and analysis, voltage profiles, contingency switching analysis, loss studies, circuit reconfigurations, and system administration.
  • Supports Operations through fuse coordination studies, motor start calculations, capacitor and voltage regulator settings, substation transformer settings, New Business responses, and assistance with circuit voltage issues.
  • Reviews interconnection studies, develops distribution interconnection estimates, attends DER meetings, and provides planning support for DER projects.
  • Conducts steady state power flow, voltage stability, transfer analysis, and other power system analyses to assess transmission system compliance with Planning Criteria and NERC/FERC Standards.
  • Performs transmission system planning studies and regional planning cases as required by NYISO, PJM, NPCC, and RFC.
  • Authors procedure guides, reports, and presentations to summarize and document technical analysis.
  • Develops summer preparation improvements, coordinates the summer team process, tracks tasks in weekly meetings, conducts daily heat event calls, and participates in reviewing the Distribution Summer Operating study with Distribution Control Center and Electric Operations.
  • Mentors and directs Engineers and Associate Engineers, reviews work, contributes to performance appraisals, stays current with industry developments, participates in emergency management and storm plans, and completes additional related assignments.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of engineering work experience. or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of engineering work experience.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of engineering work experience.
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of engineering work experience.
Relevant Work Experience
  • A minimum of 8 years engineering work experience with electric power systems, with at least 3-5 years of direct experience with electric system planning, required.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments and deadlines, required.
  • Capable of independent work which includes the ability to understand planning concepts and electric system analysis, required.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff, and various levels of management, required.
  • Strong analytical, technical and interpersonal skills, required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work on teams and cross-functional projects, required.

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
