Job Description

GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting and challenging
cooperative student position in the Hi-Line Engineering department
to work rotating semesters beginning Summer 2026.

This position is located in the Auburn, AL office with office hours of 8:30AM-5:30PM.

Based in Marietta, Georgia, GDS Associates, Inc. (GDS), is a
nation-wide, multi-service, engineering and consulting firm, specializing in
the ever-evolving electric utility industry. As a co-op student in the
Hi-Line Engineering Department, you will support a variety of utility clientele
across the country and be involved in project work including assisting
engineers and consultants in the Hi-Line Engineering Department of GDS on an
as-needed basis. The focus of the work will be on supporting our electric
utility clients with engineering and consulting services to maintain their
electric utility system and to help them plan for future growth and challenges
including:


  • System
    planning studies
  • Overhead
    and underground electric distribution and transmission design services
  • Overcurrent
    protection and sectionalizing studies
  • Arc-flash
    hazard analyses
  • Distributed
    Energy Resources (DER) interconnection studies
  • System
    modeling, GIS mapping and field inventory
  • Other
    ad hoc engineering and consulting requests.

Specific task assignments may include:


  • Learn
    about the U.S. electric utility industry
  • Assist
    full-time staff in electric utility engineering and consulting project
    work
  • Develop
    Microsoft Excel calculators and analyses
  • Prepare
    client presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Electric
    utility distribution system modeling
  • Supporting
    Time Current Characteristic (TCC) plot development for overcurrent
    protection and sectionalizing activities as well as Arc-Flash Hazard
    Analysis
  • Renewables
    interconnection assistance including modeling, analysis, and exhibit
    creation for interconnection studies
  • Technical
    research
  • Field
    work assignments including design assistance and field inventory/mapping
    of electric distribution components (poles, transformers, switchgear,
    junction cabinets, lights, etc.)
  • Maintain
    project tracking information

Experience and Skills
  • Must
    be enrolled in College or University program in engineering or related
    field.
  • Ability
    to work 40 hours per week during rotating semesters.
  • Proficient
    in Microsoft Office products.
  • Pursuing
    degree in Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Engineering
    Technology Degree.
  • Ability
    to navigate through multiple windows and software packages simultaneously.
    Ability
    to learn and use engineering analysis software packages (Milsoft WindMil,
    CYMTCC, etc.)
  • Ability
    to work on limited in field engagements and carry field tools and
    equipment
  • Ability
    to communicate clearly with team members on project complexities, and
    project goals.
  • The
    ideal candidate is eager to learn and apply their knowledge to real world
    problems, able to manage time on various projects, and be comfortable
    working with multiple team members to create solutions for our clients.
  • Students
    must have reliable transportation to the Marietta, GA office. Office
    hours are 8:30AM-5:30PM, Monday through Friday.
