The Livestock Assistant is responsible for safely and humanely moving animals from

livestock trailers through the yards and to the stunning systems, to match production line speeds for harvest.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must follow all humane handling SOP's.

  • Work in a fast paced environment, keeping up with line speed and department goals.

  • Maintain animal identification and head count throughout the yarding and stunning process.

  • Moves hogs safely and effectively with minimal stress to the animals.

  • Assist in training employees.

  • Represent Smithfield while working closely with USDA, maintaining a good government/plant

  • relationship.

  • Other tasks as defined by management.

  • Receive, unload, count, and sort hogs based on program, quality, and weight.

  • Accurately and correctly complete all paperwork and cards necessary upon arrival of animals.

  • Follow humane handling procedures at all times.

  • Identify compromised animals and segregate them according to SOP guidelines.

  • Load, cart, and sled compromised animals of various weight, exceeding 300 pounds.

  • Ensure all animals have access to water in all receiving, lairage and subject pens.

  • Conduct a final sort and follow NSIS guidelines and documentation requirements.

  • Euthanize compromised animals following captive bolt euthanasia program requirements.

  • Ensure all animals have timely lairage and USDA approval, including subject pen, before sending animals

  • to harvest.

  • Conduct daily livestock audits within SafetyChain.

  • Maintain cleanliness of the Livestock Department area, including washing down yards and removing any

  • debris (paper, plastic, gloves, unused tools, etc) on a daily basis.

  • Process paperwork and key in loads into a database for inventory.

  • Any other task deemed necessary by management.

WHAT WE'RE SEEKING:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.

  • A desire and willingness to work around and with livestock.

  • Experience with Livestock or the Meat Industry is preferred.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, 8 to 10 hours.

  • Must be capable of working in extreme hot and cold environments.

  • Good Computer Skills.

  • Attention to detail is essential.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Decisiveness to respond to observations in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively with the team.

  • Have the ability to lift 50 pounds or more unassisted.

  • Strong math aptitude.

  • Good verbal communication skills.

  • Good writing skills are preferred.

  • Computer Skills. (Word, Excel)
