What you will be doing:

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated and innovative summer intern to join our Discovery Core Applied Technology (DCAT) Group. The DCAT team designs, develops, and supports cutting-edge automation and software platforms that empower scientists to accelerate drug discovery.

As a DCAT intern, you will gain hands-on experience working on a diverse range of technologies, from developing instrument drivers to creating intuitive, user-facing web applications. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that directly support Vertex's mission of transforming the lives of people with serious diseases.

• The successful candidate will:

• Design and implement instrument drivers to seamlessly integrate new laboratory instruments into our automation platform, ensuring robust performance and scalability.
• Enhance and troubleshoot existing web applications, adding new features and improving usability.
• Develop new applications tailored to end-user needs, delivering intuitive and efficient solutions.
• Evaluate and introduce emerging technologies, testing their applicability within our environment to drive innovation.

What you will need to succeed:

• Software-engineering related background
• SQL, C#, JavaScript, HTML, CSS
• Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with the team
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Must be available for 10-12 weeks during Summer 2026 (May - August)
• Must be able to commit to On-site in San Diego, CA
• UX/UI design skills preferred
• Python experience preferred
• Knowledge of configuration management tools (e.g. BitBucket, ect) preferred
• Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships or entry level roles within this part of the organization.
• You must be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating before August 2026
• You must be available to work full-time, 40 hours per week from May - August 2026
  

Program Details:

• Full-time, paid internship $20.00 - 32.00 USD/hour
• Program Dates: May - August 2026
