What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Controls Engineer to join the Stamping Facility at our Semi Manufacturing Factory in Sparks, NV. The Controls Engineer will be experienced in the automation controls field, bringing their exposure to Siemens, Beckhoff, Kuka robots, and safety systems. This role requires hands-on involvement on the manufacturing line and emphasizes analytical abilities, organization skills, and attention to detail. As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting any lineside troubleshooting, analyzing, and improving current system, and develop and deploy new PLC code to help remove production bottlenecks.
What You'll Do
- Lead the diagnosis and resolution of PLC faults, minimizing downtime, optimizing cycle times, and enhancing process efficiency in stamping operations (e.g., press tandem line, automation, and cut-to-length line)
- Lead diagnose and resolve PLC faults to minimize downtime, improve cycle times, and enhance process efficiency
- Lead troubleshooting of motor drives (e.g., Siemens Sinamics S120, Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive, SEW Movitrac/Movifit) and communication protocols (e.g., PROFINET, EtherCAT)
- Configure and program IO devices, servo systems, Kuka robots, to meet process and production needs
- Modify PLC controls sequence logic, to enhance safety, reliability, reduce faults, and achieve production goals
- Update and optimize HMI/SCADA software (e.g., SIMATIC WinCC, TIA Portal, Ignition) to improve operator experience, including mobile panels for specialized equipment like brush cleaner or reoiler
- Review and update electrical wiring diagrams, layout drawings for VFDs, Servos, PLC and other controls devices
- Train press operators, collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., maintenance, production, and safety), and provide technical leadership for 24/7 operations as needed
- Support 24/7 production operations as needed
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years with automotive manufacturing experience as a Controls Engineering role, in stamping or metal forming environments
- Advanced proficiency in PLC programming and logic troubleshooting using IEC-61131 compliant languages (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT 3), with hands-on experience programming KUKA robots and Siemens Simatic S7-1518F PLCs
- Proficiency in HMI/SCADA industrial systems (SIMATIC WinCC, TIA Portal or Ignition SCADA)
- Experience with motor drive setup and troubleshooting (Siemens S120, Bosch Rexroth Indradrive)
- Experience with electrical design using EPlan (preferred) or AutoCAD Electrical and Schematic troubleshooting. Demonstrated experience with 3-phase 480/208 VAC, single-phase 208/120 VAC, and 24 VDC systems
- Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols, including PROFINET, EtherCAT, and Ethernet, with experience integrating distributed I/O systems (e.g., MURR Elektronik Balluff I/O-Link)
- Strong problem-solving ability to address complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions
- Leadership experience, including mentoring teams, leading projects, and collaborating across departments
