ChristianaCare Medical Group, Delaware Technical Community College & Delaware Workforce Program have partnered together to establish a Medical Assistant Academy Student program!

ChristianaCare is offering an exceptional opportunity for 10 caregivers to earn their Medical Assistant diplomas while preparing to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) certification exam. Participants will receive paid training throughout this unique program and, upon completion, will have the chance to apply and interview for a Medical Assistant position within ChristianaCare.

The program will run from February 16, 2026, through May 8, 2026.

Medical Assistant Academy students will participate in in-person classes Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Delaware Technical Community College's Wilmington Campus. Following classroom instruction, clinical rotations will begin in May 2025 at ChristianaCare locations. Reliable transportation is required to attend classes in Wilmington and travel to various practice sites across the health system.

All Medical Assistant Academy students must complete the Accuplacer assessment, a computer-based, adaptive test used by colleges to evaluate readiness in reading, writing, and math. The results are utilized for course placement rather than admissions, ensuring students enroll in classes aligned with their skill levels.

What is a Medical Assistant:

A Medical Assistant is a healthcare professional who works alongside physicians and advanced practitioners in outpatient and ambulatory settings, such as medical offices and clinics. They perform both administrative and clinical tasks while maintaining direct, patient-facing responsibilities.

Compensation:

  • During the Medical Assistant Academy Students will receive a set rate of pay of $16.50/hr., subject to applicable federal, state, and local withholding taxes.

  • Upon completion of Medical Assistant Academy Student who accept a Medical Assistant position with ChristianaCare will receive $19.67/hr., as the new MA rate of pay subject to applicable federal, state, and local withholding taxes.

  • Once enrolled; unsuccessful completion of Medical Assistant Academy Student or work obligation will result in the Medical Assistant Academy Student owing tuition back to ChristianaCare.

  • Enrolled Medical Assistant Academy Student are not eligible to receive the 2026 pay for performance merit increase.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or GED required

  • ChristianaCare caregiver in good standing with 90 days of service with ChristianaCare

  • Ability to use computer applications and systems

  • Passion for learning the medical assistant career

*Caregivers with previous accredited medical assistant education and/or certification are not eligible*

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Medical Assistant Academy is designed to build the skills, competencies, and knowledge required for the Medical Assistant role within The Medical Group of ChristianaCare. Students will learn to perform laboratory, clinical, and medical office procedures through a structured training program that combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience and an externship at ChristianaCare physician practices. Participants function as students enrolled in an accredited college's Medical Assistant program, and upon successful completion and certification, may be considered for a Medical Assistant position within The Medical Group of ChristianaCare.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate ChristianaCare core values & behaviors in all interactions inside and outside classroom

  • Attend in-person and online classroom learning during structured 3-month program; cohort students attend classes together Monday-Friday in a pre-defined schedule.

  • Complete all class work/assignments/examinations while demonstrating active learning and involvement and meeting all required deadlines.

  • Successfully passes all learning module examinations and maintains class attendance on-site at local Delaware campuses (Stanton & Wilmington) and designated Medical Group of ChristianaCare physician practice locations

  • Actively participate in Medical Assistant externship required for program completion: 160 hours at the location and schedule determined by Medical Group MA Training Manager

  • Provide safe, evidence-based, and relationship-based care that reflects ChristianaCare's core values & behaviors during externship experience.

  • Apply clear and effective nonverbal, verbal, and written communication skills when interacting with educators, employees, patients, and visitors.

  • Work constructively and collaborate with other members of the health care team.

  • Maintain an attitude of helpfulness, courtesy, and cooperation toward others.

  • Use critical thinking to solve problems.

  • Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct.

  • Demonstrates the necessary aptitude to perform assigned work safely; adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Employed ChristianaCare caregiver for at least 90 days without current disciplinary action or review

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Students must demonstrate strong communication skills-nonverbal, verbal, and written-along with critical thinking abilities to solve problems effectively. They should exhibit collaboration and teamwork with instructors, peers, and staff within The Medical Group physician practices. Additionally, flexibility and adaptability are essential for responding to changing priorities and meeting organizational needs.

This position is grant funded; continuation of this position is contingent upon the grant being renewed.

Participants in the Medical Assistant Academy will earn a set hourly rate of $16.50, subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes. Upon successful completion of the program, students who accept a Medical Assistant position with ChristianaCare will receive the new MA pay rate of $19.67 per hour, also subject to applicable withholdings. This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
