I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
Facilities Buildings & Grounds ( FBG) is currently seeking a Carpenter to help support the University's mission and vision in Facilities Services. Facilities, Buildings and Grounds is a part of GWU's Division of Safety and Operations, which maintains GW's property and grounds on all three campuses. The work schedule for the Carpenter is 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, to include a Holiday and Weekend Rotating Schedule.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities, Buildings and Grounds, the Carpenter typically performs semi-skilled and/or journey level work in the maintenance, repair, remodeling, alterations and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment. This position will be utilized as a tradesperson.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Adhere to written job orders, blueprints, and sketches to build, restore, and repair doors, partitions, and walls to assist with the remodeling and altering of buildings and offices.
  • Build, repair, finish, and refinish furniture, including, cabinets, bookcases, cornices, and paneling.
  • Lay and repair linoleum and tile.
  • Repair and remodel window frames and install window glass.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment/tools such as sanders, planes, lathes, power saws, and drills.
  • Assign, inspect, and assist with work orders performed by peers on large jobs. Ensure that work is performed according to proper safety standards and, if applicable, to the D.C. Building Code Regulations.
  • Assist with estimating the costs, time, manpower, and material needed for projects.


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
A valid driver's license is required.

Hiring Range $24.09 - $31.23
