Leadership Coaches (LCs) are college-aged students who guide teams, facilitate reflections, and evaluate team performances, bringing college-level enthusiasm to the Challenge. As a result of serving as an LC, you will have the opportunity to deepen your own leadership while building relevant professional skills, such as the ability to work on diverse, intergenerational teams, communication, and critical thinking, while shaping young minds. Past Shelton Challenge experience is
preferred, but not required.
About the Shelton Leadership Center
The Shelton Leadership Center was founded in 2002 by General Hugh Shelton following his retirement as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His desire to give back to his alma mater NC State University, prompted him to initiate a scholarship program. Soon, his efforts grew to include educational programs and organizational development training focused on developing the next generation of values-based leaders. The Shelton Leadership Center's value-based leadership development programs now reach pre-college, college students, and professionals within multiple settings, including NC State and other higher education institutions, corporations, government entities, non-profits, and youth development organizations.
About the Red Hat Shelton Challenge
The Shelton Challenge is a six-day, residential program built on the Shelton Leadership Center's core values-compassion, integrity, belonging, and social responsibility-and is designed to help high school students enhance their capacities to become values-based leaders. This immersive program is designed to transform potential into real-world skills through mentorship, self-reflection, and shared discovery.
