Position Summary
The ANIII of Patient Care Services is responsible for collaborating with the Director or designee within designated area to manage patient care operations and ensure the delivery of excellent patient care centered on evidence-based practices. The ANIII has 24/7 operational responsibilities and manages the departments' operational practices, quality, safety, customer service, planning and clerical practices generally during off business hours.
Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborate with the leadership team to create a work environment that engages staff in the attainment of department and organizational goals and vision while promoting high quality, safe patient care and maximizing patient flow. Ensures excellence in quality, safety and regulatory requirements.
Oversees daily operations, resource allocation, and patient flow between pre-op, OR, PACU, and inpatient units. Supports high quality pre-operative, procedural, post-procedural, post-anesthesia, and all levels of care for patients spanning the age continuum. Oversees peri-Anesthesia staffing, scheduling, payroll, and performance reviews while ensuring regulatory compliance and positive patient experiences.
Provides clinical guidance during the staffing process and assists in long range planning for resource distribution prioritization.
Supervises Peri-Anesthesia staffing and coordinates care to ensure smooth operations, positive customer experiences, and efficient throughput. Coordinates care with the multidisciplinary team to include surgeons, anesthesia, ancillary services, and vendors. Maintains strong focus on patient safety, employee engagement, and continuous quality improvement. Holds staff accountable for quality, safety, and efficiency outcomes, and drives teams to achieve departmental and organizational key performance indicators.
Participates in the development and training of staff ensuring a common understanding of clinical and technical knowledge is gained. Assists with the assessment of learning/educational needs of staff and the development of teaching tools to meet identified needs.
Ensures conditions of employment and all mandatories are met by staff. Onboards, trains, evaluates and counsels staff as necessary. Prepares, coordinates, and performs staff huddles, presentations, and meetings. Develops meeting agendas, takes minutes, and actionable follow ups. Articulates vision and supports change management.
Evaluates and assists in data gathering to identify-major issues related to delays, unanticipated events, and trends in patient care for enterprise-wide or service line/unit/clinic level problem solving.
Demonstrates excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills under pressure. Refers to American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards and best practices. Investigates evidenced based practices and applicability to UIH Peri-Anesthesia department. Makes recommendations for process improvement and action plans. Executes upon leadership approval.
Either directly within the department or in combination with other functional areas/ groups for scheduling. Assign, direct and review the work of subordinate supervisors/other nursing personnel.
Ensures staffing and assignments support operational needs. Fosters a culture of teamwork, accountability, and patient-centered care.
Prepare formal answers to, and recommend the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters.
Participates in reviewing, monitoring, developing, and implementing quality indicators that include appropriate quality benchmarks and best practices. Helps assure the organization meets compliance standards. Evaluates practice protocols and procedures using quality care and cost outcome indicators.
Ensures that practice aligns with policies. Supports policy review, revises and prepares policies that relate to peri-anesthesia functions.
Serving both internally and externally as a resource. Establishes regular communication processes with physicians, nurses, and management to review status, variances, resolutions as needed. Serves as a liaison for clinical services and interprofessional care team. Identifies and utilizes strategies to monitor and evaluate resource management decisions on quality and timeliness for supplemental staff requests.
Participates in and leads unit- and division-level projects.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- Three years of professional nursing experience.
OR
- Two years of professional nursing experience and one year of related advanced education.
- Critical care experience required: One year ICU level experience or tertiary care PACU experience where ICU level of care was managed.
- Nationally certified through ANCC approved certifier, in area relevant to clinical area, or must obtain certification within a year of starting the job.
- Current CPR and/or other required unit specific certifications.
- ACLS & PALS certification required or must become certified within a year of starting the job.
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical experience, preferably in an academic health care setting.
- CPAN, CAPA, or CCRN certification preferred
- Process improvement and change management experience.
- Minimum of two to three years' experience in nursing leadership/management.
- Master's or Doctorate Degree preferred in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or Business.
- Two years of related relevant clinical experience. Experience in dynamic high throughput unit.\
- Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing standards, anesthesia recovery, and critical event management.
- Effective communication and presentation skills (oral and written) to facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, families, and health care providers.
