SENIOR CONTROLS ENGINEER
SOUTHFIELD, MI

(The position will be located in Rochester Hills, MI for the first 3-9 months)

Reporting to the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Manager, the Senior Controls Engineer will be responsible for leading, implementing, managing, and supporting production and prototype equipment while driving innovation and advancements in new technologies and manufacturing processes. Specifically for a new product with Lear called FlexAir.

This product encompasses automated processes for plastic extrusion, material handling, robotics, cutting, vision, and quality controls.

The Role:



  • Responsible for new process and equipment development from technical specification to installation and startup.
  • Ability to design and assist in designing all aspects of electrical control systems and programming using and improving Lear standards.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and make corrections, changes, and optimizations to PLC and robot programs and HMI screens from our integrator supply base and further develop PLC software standards for FlexAir.
  • Support install, launch and production of all manufacturing cells.
  • Interface with and manage vendors.
  • Implement and support new automation strategies.
  • Ability to identify and implement controls strategies to assist with equipment status and diagnosis leading to effective recovery from equipment failure, e-stops, and maintenance interventions.
  • Mentor and Train plant controls engineers and support production as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across cross functional disciplines such as product engineering, quality, manufacturing, maintenance, logistics, etc.
  • Travel: At this time only local travel is required between Southfield and Rochester Hills, as well as regional travel to our suppliers and integrators in Michigan. Occasional travel to other suppliers outside of the state. Travel may increase as production plant rollouts develop.
  • Create standardized documents and processes.
  • Expected to work with a high level of autonomy based on prior experience.

Qualifications:



  • Expert in PLC communication and ladder logic (RS logix 500, RS logix 5000, Factory Talk HMI, Baluff I/O link, etc).
  • Proficient in Siemens controls systems
  • Basic understanding of Robotics and their integration into a manufacturing production cell (Yaskawa and Fanuc preferred)
  • Understand and communicate applicable safety standards: general industry (OSHA 1910), light screens and area scanners, robot safety (ANSI/RIA 15.06), automated vehicles, conveyor safety
  • Ability to read electrical drawings
  • Sufficient AutoCAD experience to maintain and update electrical schematics
  • Experience with controls and programming servo driven equipment
  • Basic experience with Keyence and Cognex equipment for vision, bin pick, and sensing
  • Basic experience with RFID equipment
  • Knowledge or history of integrating equipment with MES systems



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or related degree in mechatronics, controls & automation, or industrial engineering.
  • 8+ years' experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated history of leading large-scale projects.
