Position Description

The Department of Landscape Architecture in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in the fall 2026 semester (September 1, 2026) or earlier.

The Department seeks a colleague with diverse skills, knowledge, and experiences who will advance the landscape architecture discipline, promote critical and creative design approaches, and integrate social, technical, and biophysical processes in the design of resilient landscapes with spatial experiences that inspire and delight.

Recently, the TTU Office of Research & Innovation embarked on a campus-wide initiative focused on maximizing the impact of research and creative endeavors. In doing so, TTU identified five Strategic Research Themes, which include Systems Resilience & Adaptability, Powering Our Future, Advancing One Health, Rural & Urban Development, and Strengthening National Security.

Applicants should demonstrate how their research and teaching emphasis connects to the TTU Strategic Research Themes. Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to TTU are encouraged to apply. Service duties include program-building, as well as a commitment to extracurricular activities. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

About the College

In addition to the Department of Landscape Architecture, the Davis College of Agricultural Science & Natural Resources is home to the departments of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Plant and Soil Science, and Veterinary Sciences, along with multiple research centers and institutes. For the most recent academic year, the Davis College had 2,759 undergraduate and 539 graduate students and generated approximately $20.1 million annually in extramural research funding.

About the Department/School/Area

The Department of Landscape Architecture (DoLA) has a long history of excellence. The Bachelor (BLA) and Master (MLA) of Landscape Architecture programs are fully accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). Support for the DoLA by its alumni and industry groups in the state is very strong. The DoLA is an essential contributor to the research enterprise of the Davis College and has a strong track record of involving students in service-learning activities and engaging the Lubbock community through outreach efforts.

The DoLA has long-standing relationships with other campus programs, including the Huckabee College of Architecture and the multi-disciplinary Land Use, Planning, Management and Design PhD program. The DoLA has facilities in two buildings on campus. The CASNR Annex is home to department and faculty offices as well as classroom, computer lab, printing, plotting, and digital fabrication spaces. The Landscape Architecture studio space is located in the newly renovated Agricultural Pavilion, one of the first buildings on the Texas Tech University campus.

Major/Essential Functions

In line with TTU's strategic priorities to engage and empower a dynamic student body, enable innovative research and creative activities, and transform lives and communities through outreach and engaged scholarship, applicants should have experience working with a breadth of student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within individual or across the areas of teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

As a faculty member in the Department of Landscape Architecture, you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to the teaching mission of the DoLA by combining your areas of interest and expertise.
  • Mentor and recruit graduate students (MLA and PhD) who share interests with your area of teaching expertise and research agenda.
  • Develop a record of peer-reviewed/funded research that promotes the mission and vision of the DoLA.
  • Provide service to the DoLA, the Davis College, TTU, and the profession that connects with your areas of interest and expertise.

Faculty Qualifications

Required qualifications for this position are:

  • Accredited landscape architecture degree (BLA or MLA) and a terminal degree (PhD) in a related discipline OR a terminal landscape architecture degree (MLA).
  • Experience teaching landscape architecture studio or lecture courses (this includes teaching while a graduate student) in at least one of the following areas:
    • Resilient landscapes
    • Urbanization and urban design
    • Landscape performance
    • Landscape technology
  • Strong landscape architecture skills and knowledge as evidenced by an emerging or established research record in at least one of the following areas:
    • Resilient landscapes
    • Urbanization and urban design
    • Landscape performance
    • Landscape technology

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the required qualifications, individuals with the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • US professional licensure and/or a strong record of professional practice.
  • Record of peer-reviewed research and/or juried design awards at the regional, national, and/or international level.
  • Evidence of capacity to generate external funding and/or evidence of an impactful research agenda.
  • Demonstrated experience with outreach and engagement. This includes but is not limited to community-engaged projects, working with entities outside of the university, including lectures, workshops, or exhibits, K-12 outreach, policy and advocacy, speaking engagements, a university design center that engages with the community, etc.
