About the Department |
The Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design (ID) at NC State University's College of Design offers undergraduate and graduate programs in both Graphic and Experience Design (
GXD) and Industrial Design (ID). The College of Design also includes programs in Architecture, Media Arts, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning, and a doctoral program in design. Known for its selective admissions process, the College attracts high-achieving students and boasts consistently high graduation rates.
The Bachelor of Graphic and Experience Design (
BGXD) and Master of Graphic and Experience Design (
MGXD) programs integrate user experience and user interface design (UX/UI) with core graphic design principles such as branding, typography, and service design. Students develop interfaces, digital products, brands, and experiential environments, grounded in human-centered research methodologies to ensure a focus on user needs and desires. Our alumni have established successful careers at leading software companies and design firms, including
IBM, Red Hat,
SAS, Lenovo, Citrix,
IQVIA, Pentagram,
IDEO, Willowtree, and R/GA. Recent
MGXD graduates have also transitioned into faculty positions at prominent research universities such as Virginia Tech, University of Arkansas, The Ohio State University, University of Illinois, University of Florida, and Boise State. |

Essential Job Duties |
The Department of Graphic Design and Industrial Design invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor of Graphic and Experience Design (
GXD). This position will begin in August 2026 as a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty role with a 9-month appointment for three years, offering the potential for renewal and promotion. This position is primarily focused on undergraduate teaching with opportunities for professional development and service activities. The successful candidate will be a passionate and dedicated educator with a strong commitment to student success and a contemporary understanding of graphic and experience design principles and industry practices, including human-centered design, user experience and user interface design, branding and visual communication, artificial intelligence applications, and digital typography.
Essential duties for the position include:
- Teach 12 credits per semester (6-credit studios and/or 3-credit seminars) in the Bachelor of Graphic & Experience Design Program (BGXD)
- Participate in BGXD admissions
- Advise BGXD students
- Develop curriculum with program faculty
Other responsibilities:
- Serve on select program, department, and college committees
- Participate in select outreach activities
- Participate in open-house events
- Engage with BGXD alumni
- Engage in ongoing professional development activities to enhance teaching skills and stay current with industry trends and best practices.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Candidates must hold, at minimum, a terminal Master's degree (MGD/MDes/MFA) in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Experience Design, or other design-related area or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience working in the design industry and/or teaching design at the college level.

Other Required Qualifications |
- Proficiency in current design software including Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Figma, and AI-powered tools.
- Demonstrated expertise of typographic principles across graphic design and UX, emphasizing its impact on branding, readability, and user interface design.
- Knowledge of user research methods, design methods, and/or data-driven UX.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience designing for complex, multi-platform design systems across branding, product, and environment.
- Experience working in emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.
- Experience designing data visualizations that translate complex information into meaningful visual narratives.
