Department 5325, Flight Systems and Avionics is seeking an entry level Electrical Design Engineer to enhance our diverse engineering team. The position is ideal for individuals eager to design, develop, and create advanced electronic systems.

Job Summary: We are seeking a motivated, detail oriented, and creative entry level Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers, contributing to the creation of innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and a passion for technology. The position offers an excellent opportunity for professional growth and development in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and development of electrical systems and components, including circuit design, schematic creation, and printed circuit board layout.
  • Conduct electronic parts selection to meet design requirements by reading and understanding technical datasheets and verifying component footprints and mechanical envelope.
  • Use software tools to simulate electrical circuits and systems to analyze performance and identify potential issues.
  • Assist in the testing and validation of electrical designs, including creating test setups, using laboratory bench equipment to conduct experiments, and analyzing results.
  • Identify and troubleshoot design issues, providing solutions, and implement improvements.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, work instructions, test procedures, and reports.
  • Staying updated with the latest technologies, tools, and industry trends to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, including mechanical, and software engineers , to ensure designs meet project requirements.
Salary Range

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • 2+ years of experience in electrical circuit design.
  • Strong foundation in electrical and electronic circuit theory.
  • Experience with circuit design and circuit simulation using tools such as Ltspice.
  • Experience with electronic schematic capture, printed circuit board layout, and electronic part selection to meet design requirements.
  • Familiar with schematic capture and PCB layout ECAD tools such as KiCAD, Altium, PADS Designer, Xpedition, or any other ECAD tool.
  • Testing experience of electronic prototypes, printed circuit board checkout, or electronics troubleshooting using standard laboratory equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or multimeters.
  • Experience with electrical cable set design and test of fabricated cables.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
About Our Team

The Flight Systems and Avionics (5325) Department developments and delivers innovative advanced avionic flight components and systems in support of critical programs at Sandia National Labs. These avionics systems target multiple applications that include computing solutions for Vehicle Navigation, Pointing, Control, Hardware in the loop testing, Specialized Radars and Hypersonic systems. Our department specializes in reconfigurable modular digital signal processing systems utilizing state of the art electronics, FPGA technology and general-purpose microprocessors.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
