Position Description:

Purpose

The Office of Research helps to facilitate life-saving biomedical research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Within the department's portfolio of specialty research services, the MCW Engineering Core provides advanced technical and support services for investigators and research laboratories. Also known as the Design and Fabrication Lab, the Core offers a range of services including custom research device design and fabrication, laboratory equipment calibrations and repair, 3D-printing services including anatomical models from CT and MR data, new protocol development, and consultative support.

The Engineer I supports the workload in the MCW Engineering Core by assisting in the design, fabrication, maintenance, and testing of medical research instrumentation. The Engineer employs a wide-ranging skill set to support the Core team and take on independent projects.

Primary Functions

  • Under guidance and/or supervision, assist or perform installation, calibration, inspection, preventative maintenance, fabrication, and repairs of biomedical research equipment to include electrical, electronic, pneumatic, mechanical, fluidic, and robotic systems.
  • Machine parts, build prototypes, and fabricate custom research devices using traditional fabrication techniques and 3D printing technology.
  • Create scaled 2D and 3D engineering drawings in SolidWorks and in Microsoft Visio Technical software.
  • Apply technical engineering standards, principles, concepts, and techniques to design and repair projects.
  • Perform detailed analysis of system performance data.
  • Compile information into publishable quality formats.
  • Compile information gathered from testing and analysis to generate complete reports to faculty and outside funding organizations.
  • Assist faculty in timely preparation of manuscripts, reports, and grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Must have general science knowledge in areas of biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Must be adept in data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking and resource management.

Knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering is essential.

Excellent oral communication skills are essential.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office suite.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team inter-dependently with co-workers. Ability to effectively plan and organize projects affecting the work of others. Ability to work within a deadline-driven environment.

Knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical fabrication techniques.

Complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.





Preferred Schedule:




M-F 8-5 pm (some flexibility)

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or technology
