SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES

The SOX Internal Controls Manager role is an integral part of the SOX Compliance program at SouthState Bank. The SOX Internal Controls Manager is a governance-focused, individual contributor responsible for control design, remediation oversight, SOX risk assessments, and deficiency evaluation. The SOX Internal Controls Manager will partner with finance, credit, model owners, business, and internal/external auditors to ensure controls are well-designed, remediations are practical and sustainable, and deficiencies are appropriately evaluated and escalated.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Control design & enhancement

    • Design, update and rationalize control activities across finance and business processes

    • Provide control execution guidance and evidence expectations to controls owners

    • Recommend preventive vs. detective controls and identify automation opportunities.

  • Risk assessment & scoping

    • Lead SOX risk assessments to define the control universe and testing scope

    • Apply judgment to assess business impact and likelihood to prioritize control efforts.

  • Deficiency evaluation & remediation governance

    • Evaluate control deficiencies (root cause analysis) and recommend remediation options

    • Develop remediation plans with owners: define actions, owners, timelines, acceptance criteria, and success metrics.

    • Track remediation progress and perform remediation quality reviews

  • Audit liaison & oversight

    • Collaborate with external auditors on risk assessments and control design, ensuring control deliverables meet PCAOB/Big-4 expectations

    • Support preparation of materials for senior management / Audit Committee when required

  • Policy, training & continuous improvement

    • Maintain and update SOX policies, control frameworks, and guidance

    • Deliver training to control owners on control design, evidence expectations, and remediation best practices

    • Drive improvement initiatives (control automation, monitoring dashboards, data lineage)

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong GAAP knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply technical accounting judgment in controls and deficiency evaluation

  • Direct experience working with loan and deposit lifecycles and broader banking processes, including familiarity with controls related to CECL, investments, loan valuations and credit administration

  • Demonstrated experience evaluating design of controls, performing root-cause analysis, and managing remediations

  • Strong technical writing skills - ability to produce audit-quality deficiency writeups and status reports

  • Excellent project management, stakeholder management and presentation skills

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA/CIA strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 6 years relevant experience combining Big-4 external audit and/or SOX governance in financial services (examples: 3+ years Big-4 + 3+ years SOX governance; or 6 years combined experience with strong audit exposure).

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS/CLASSES

Required annual compliance training.

This position may have supervisory responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations, and identify customers. This position requires a large amount of time in front of a computer. This can be done sitting or standing with use of the right desk. This position requires lifting boxes and coin on a daily basis. This position requires the ability to drive a company vehicle to and from other locations. This position may require bending and reaching.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Telecommuting roles no matter if hybrid or 100% full time telecommuting must have a secure home office environment that is free from background noise and distractions. They must also have a reliable private internet connection that is not supplied by use of cellular data (hot spot). Cable or fiber connections are preferred. Requirements are subject to change, as new systems and technology is delivered.

TRAVEL

This position may require travel outside of local area.

In accordance with Colorado law: Colorado pay for this position is anticipated to be between $99,237.00 - $158,521.00 , actual offers to be determined based on applicant's skills, experience and education.
