Responsibilities

The Psychiatric Institute of Washington is seeking an experienced and dedicated Nurse Manager to join our team of Behavioral Health professionals!

Position Summary:

The Nurse Manager - is responsible for ensuring coordinated delivery of patient care in accordance with the established standards of care, mental health practice and hospital policy, goals and objectives. Assists in contributing to the hospital's philosophy, objectives, educational and Performance & Improvement efforts, while providing supervision of House Supervisors, RN's and MHTs. This position will monitor staffing needs on assigned shifts. The Manager - Nursing assists the CNO in evaluating, reviewing, designing and implementing hospital training events with respect to all RN//MHT staff required training. Also provides, on as-needed basis, patient nursing assessments. Participates in Treatment Team meetings as needed.

Will handle all other duties as assigned by the CNO and senior leadership.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors Degree in Nursing required; MSN preferred

Must have a minimum of 3 years of related nursing leadership experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting; 5-8 years preferred.

Knowledge of nursing care standards, methods, and techniques in all areas of psychiatric nursing.

Experience establishing a therapeutic working relationship with patients' family members.

Working knowledge of JCAHO, HCFA, OSHA , and state and federal regulatory requirements.

Ability to engage and develop RN and MHT staff.

Current District of Columbia Nursing License.

Effective communication skills (written and oral).

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Basic systems knowledge (list systems used): CERNER, UKG preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staff Management

  • Assesses staff on-unit training needs. Plans and organizes in-service programs based on needs.
  • Provides individual teaching to staff in the following skills: documentation, assessing growth and developmental stages, implementing behavior modification techniques, facilitating comfort and cooperation of patients' families, participating in or leading groups and other meetings, and assuming responsibility in adapting the milieu for therapeutic purposes

Treatment Planning

  • Develops and implements nursing care plans for patients with complex problems.
  • Coordinate, maintain and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment planning offered by Nursing.
  • Utilizes the nursing process in designing a plan of care for patients with complex problems and communicates plan to staff.
  • Demonstrates and shares clinical knowledge with staff by providing input into plans, planning meetings, and other staff or patient meetings.

Milieu Management

  • Serves as resource person for staff in providing individual care to patients and in utilizing the structure and the processes of the unit milieu as a therapeutic tool.
  • Assures patients are adequately oriented to the unit.
  • Monitors unit activity and encourages patient participation.
  • Prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care to patients during hospitalization.
  • Provides structure and maintains a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the patient and other health care providers.
  • Communicates with other hospital departments and units to obtain services and resources necessary for patient care.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Ensure Infection Control, Safety and Risk Management policies are implemented on the unit.
  • Process incident reports, conduct investigations and corrective plans when needed.
  • Reviews critical incidents occurring on the unit through staff discussion and teaching, and documents accordingly in the minutes and on training records.
  • Complies with infection control, OSHA regulations and risk management measures.
  • Reports safety and environmental hazards.
