The Manager Data Science and Analytics leads the support of critical commercial, operational, and strategic planning decisions. This role is responsible for directly growing and leading a Team and broader project group through the development of practical solutions that drive an improvement in critical business decisions that affect Department success and generate a competitive advantage. Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate to develop and manage the project portfolio for Network Planning while providing analytical and subject matter expert insight and guidance for Commercial and Operational Planning initiatives
- Develop plans and lead implementation of analytical and data science models and techniques to enhance the data-driven capabilities of Network Planning while ensuring quality control of all Data Science data collection, integrity, and analysis
- Support the analysis and development of all Operations Planning initiatives
- Maintain continuity with Network Planning methodologies, ideas, and technology, and steer recommendations the Department should take based on characteristics of our business and knowledge of future plans
- Manage research, analysis, and development of conclusions and present findings to Senior Management and Executive Leaders for discussion and evaluation
- Maintain positive relationships with all Internal and External Customers to ensure that all Data Science activities are adequately informed and are performed in a collaborative manner
- Build effective partnerships with departments across Southwest Airlines both within the Commercial as well as Operational sides of the business
- Identifies and evaluates the most important opportunities and issues across the department to be addressed through Data Science and works with leadership to manage those opportunities
- Serves as leader, advisor, or mentor on multiple, highly complex data science programs, working with business Customers to understand contextual problems quickly and define, analyze, and deliver innovative solutions based on business objectives
- Leads others on the application of mathematics, statistic, and/or advanced modeling methods (Python, R, SQL, Atleryx, Tableau, etc.) to discover and gain insights on business problems; create, monitor, and manage entities; and/or develop predictive or prescriptive capabilities in creative ways
- May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate intermediate mastery of statistical and analytical techniques that arrive at fact based decision making
- Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits
- Knowledge of programming languages and their applications
- Knowledge of the application of mathematics, statistic, and/or advanced modeling methods (Python, R, SQL, Atleryx, Tableau, etc.) to discover and gain insights on business problems
- Understand and apply information to contribute to the organization*s strategic plan
- Identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
- Ability to listen, understand, and communicate ideas presented in writing and/or in speaking with others
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
- Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events)
- Ability to perform database querying in SQL as well as understands modeling in scripting languages such as Python or R
Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED
Experience
- Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading team(s)
- Fully functioning, broad knowledge in:
- Transportation, logistics, optimization, or operations
- Analytical programming, querying or schedule assessment tools (R, Python, SQL, SkySuite, etc.)
- Aviation industry quantitative analysis in Finance, Revenue Management, Network Planning or Operational Research
- Presentation and visualization platforms (Tableau, PowerBI, Shiny, etc.)
Licensing/Certification
Physical Abilities
- Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
- Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
- Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
Other Qualifications
- Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines
Pay & Benefits:
Competitive market salary from $148,500.00 per year to $165,000.00 per year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the discretion of the company.
