Job Description

Utilizes technology that merges radiopharmaceutical imaging technology with other forms for medical imaging technology for diagnostic purposes. Operates Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) equipment.

Job Responsibility




  • * Prepares patient for exam.

    • Explains procedure to patient in easy-to-understand terms based on professional knowledge.
    • Screens for pregnancy and ensures consent form for administration of IV contrast materials has been obtained.
    • Sets up equipment appropriately to administer prescribed procedure in a timely fashion.
    • Positions patient for scanning according to departmental standard operating procedures.

  • * Performs various exams using Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT and SPECT/CT equipment.

    • Prepares radiopharmaceuticals according to activity and quantity required for prescribed exam.
    • Dispenses prescribed radiopharmaceuticals to patient for oral ingestion or administers through venipuncture and intravenous injection. Utilizes appropriate flush technique for existing IV lines, as required.
    • Disposes of radioactive waste and surveys exam area for radiation according to established protocols.

  • * Prepares images/films for clinical review and assignment to record.

    • Labels films/images with accurate patient demographics and required exam specific information.
    • Assesses films/images for quality and accuracy of information.
    • Completes necessary paperwork and prepares films/images for Radiologist interpretation.

  • * Performs various quality control measures according to established policies, procedures, and regulations.

    • Performs quality control procedures on prepared radiopharmaceutical kit/dose prior to patient administration.
    • Performs regular quality control activities on dosing equipment.
    • Maintains and monitors radioactive waste according to NYS regulations.
    • Performs blood cell labeling according to protocols.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Job Qualification




  • Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine program, required.
  • Current New York State Department of Health licensure as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, required.
  • R.T. (N) registration with American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) OR CNMT registration with Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), required.
  • Current R.T.(CT) registration with American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT), OR NMTCB (CT) certification with Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS or BCLS) certification, required.
  • Prior experience in Nuclear Medicine, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
