About the Department and/or College

The National Wind Institute (NWI) has evolved from its traditional singular focus on wind hazards to three main research pillars of Energy Systems, Atmospheric Measurement & Simulation, and Wind Engineering. Though all three of these pillars focus on distinct issues, they also maintain common ground via cross cutting themes. All research seeks to benefit communities at micro and macro scales.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Contributes to the university's mission through research and service.
  • Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Work with a group established to substantially enhance the 0-6hr prediction of severe Texas flooding
  • and other types of high-impact weather events through a Warn-on-Forecast strategy.
  • Implement and maintain a real-time Warn-on-Forecast System capability in Texas (WoFS; similar to
  • the same system designed at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
  • Close collaboration with several State of Texas and National Weather Service partners and some associated travel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Experience running convection-allowing numerical weather prediction models Cloud-based and/or Linux computing and programming experience
  • Ability to maintain a continuous real-time weather forecasting system
  • Works well within a team environment

Required Qualifications

Academic degree as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held. Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a researcher. Should have a record of activity which has contributed to the discipline or field of research.
This position requires eligibility to drive TTU vehicles, including a valid U.S. driver license and two years of driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Sciences.

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
