Job Title: Night Janitor

Position Overview

The Night Janitor plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and presentation of BBSI's facilities after normal operating hours. This position ensures that all workspaces, restrooms, common areas, and exterior walkways are safe, hygienic, and visually welcoming for employees and visitors each morning. The Night Janitor is responsible for executing cleaning schedules, operating various janitorial tools and equipment, adhering to safety and chemical handling protocols, and following detailed task lists to maintain quality standards throughout the facility.

The ideal candidate for this position is dependable, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision. This position requires a strong work ethic, time management, and commitment to completing tasks thoroughly and efficiently within designated timeframes. The Night Janitor is also expected to communicate any maintenance or safety issues promptly and collaborate with facility management when deeper cleaning or repairs are needed.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning and Sanitation

  • Perform routine cleaning and disinfecting of offices, hallways, restrooms, breakrooms, and common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust all assigned areas in accordance with the cleaning schedule.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, mirrors, countertops, toilets, urinals, partitions, and floors.
  • Restock restroom supplies such as toilet paper, soap, paper towels, and air fresheners.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins throughout the building and ensure proper disposal and separation of waste.
  • Wipe down and disinfect high-touch surfaces such as door handles, elevator buttons, light switches, keyboards, and handrails.
  • Clean glass surfaces, including interior windows, partitions, and entryway doors.
  • Spot clean walls, baseboards, and ceilings to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Maintain cleanliness of employee kitchen areas, including sinks, counters, microwaves, refrigerators, and tables.
  • Remove any debris or obstructions in hallways and stairwells to ensure clear passageways for safety.

Floor Care and Maintenance

  • Operate janitorial equipment such as auto scrubbers, buffers, and carpet extractors as needed.
  • Perform deep cleaning of floors, including stripping, waxing, polishing, and buffing according to scheduled maintenance plans.
  • Spot clean carpet stains and perform periodic carpet shampooing to maintain appearance and longevity.
  • Use appropriate cleaning agents and techniques for various flooring materials such as tile, laminate, vinyl, and hardwood.
  • Inspect floors nightly for spills, scuff marks, or hazards and take immediate corrective action.

Special Cleaning Projects

  • Perform scheduled deep cleaning projects including furniture dusting, vent cleaning, and interior window washing.
  • Clean and maintain janitorial storage areas and supply closets to ensure safe and organized storage of chemicals and tools.
  • Support seasonal or event-related cleaning tasks such as pre-meeting setups, post-event cleanups, and floor refinishing.
  • Assist with special facility maintenance tasks, including basic repairs, lightbulb replacement, and minor fixture cleaning.

Exterior and Entryway Maintenance

  • Sweep and maintain building entryways, walkways, and surrounding exterior areas.
  • Remove litter, debris, and cigarette waste from building grounds.
  • Clean exterior doors, glass, and light fixtures to maintain a professional and safe entrance.
  • During winter months, assist with snow and ice removal at building entrances and pathways as assigned.

Equipment, Tools, and Supplies

  • Properly handle and maintain all janitorial tools such as mops, brooms, dusters, vacuums, and buffers.
  • Safely use cleaning chemicals and materials, ensuring adherence to OSHA standards and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of cleaning supplies and report low stock or supply needs to the Facilities Manager.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned, stored, and maintained after use to prolong service life and prevent malfunctions.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures to ensure a hazard-free work environment.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, and slip-resistant footwear.
  • Properly label, store, and handle cleaning chemicals in compliance with OSHA and local regulations.
  • Immediately report any safety hazards, spills, or broken equipment to the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Participate in safety drills, equipment training, and ongoing facility maintenance meetings.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Maintain open communication with facility management regarding cleaning priorities, completed tasks, and identified issues.
  • Provide feedback on supply usage, cleaning product performance, or potential process improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with other janitorial and maintenance staff to coordinate large cleaning projects or special requests.
  • Exhibit professionalism and discretion when cleaning occupied areas or interacting with employees working late shifts.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move continuously for the duration of the shift.
  • Regularly lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Capable of repetitive motion, such as mopping, vacuuming, and scrubbing for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working around cleaning chemicals, odors, and varying temperatures.
  • Able to climb ladders or step stools to reach and clean high surfaces.

Work Schedule and Environment

  • This position is primarily scheduled during evening or overnight hours, typically between 6:00 PM and 3:00 AM.
  • Workdays may vary based on facility needs, with occasional weekend or holiday shifts for deep cleaning or special projects.
  • Work environment includes exposure to cleaning chemicals, moving equipment, and occasionally noisy machinery.
  • May work independently or in small teams depending on building size and cleaning assignments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of custodial, housekeeping, or janitorial experience in a commercial or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe cleaning techniques, equipment operation, and chemical handling.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions, safety labels, and facility procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and time management skills.

  • Must pass background check and drug screening prior to employment.
