Purpose of Position
The School of the Arts at Northern Kentucky University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, on-campus position in Instrumental Music Education at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2026. We seek a dynamic and collaborative educator committed to excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in music education and instrumental music education, which may include methods, conducting, pedagogy, supervision of student teachers, and other courses in the candidate's area of expertise.

  • Teach undergraduate courses in a secondary area of expertise, including: applied lessons, music history, music theory, ensemble conducting, or aural skills

  • Coordinate the instrumental music education program and collaborate with faculty across performance and education areas.

  • Engage in recruitment and retention efforts for the music education program.

  • Demonstrate a trajectory of active research, scholarship, and/or creative activity.

  • Participate in program, college, and university service.

  • Advise undergraduate students and contribute to curriculum development.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications


  • Doctorate in Music Education (ABD considered) or comparable terminal degree.
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in K-12 instrumental music.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Record of scholarship that includes an established or emerging record of publications and/or presentations at state/regional/national conferences.
  • Commitment to empowering diverse learners for economic and social mobility.
  • Familiarity with current pedagogy, trends, and technologies in music education.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising student teachers or coordinating field experiences.
  • Collegiate-level teaching experience
  • Record of scholarly activity in music education.
