Summer 2026 - Geotechnical & Tunneling Intern

STV is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Geotechnical Lab & Field Services Intern to join our team. This internship offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level candidates to work alongside our experienced team, learn, and contribute to meaningful projects. Preference will be given to those who can participate in the internship for at least 3 months. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience working with the field and laboratory services office in Glasgow, Kentucky. You will support our materials testing lab, construction inspection personnel, and geotechnical engineering staff in their day-to-day activities. You will be involved in the planning, organization, development, supervision, and interpretation of geotechnical investigations; this includes drilling/boring programs, laboratory testing, and the development of geotechnical recommendations. Responsibilities:
  • Support the development and implementation of geotechnical subsurface exploration plans.
  • Help prepare geotechnical data sheets such as boring profiles and geotechnical typical sections.
  • Interpret geology, geotechnical, and hydrologic conditions to understand their impact on design and construction.
  • Support drill crews in the field on routine projects.
  • Perform laboratory testing such as Atterberg Limits, Grainsize Analyses, Unconfined Compressive Strength of Soil, Standard/Modified Proctor, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Testing.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support project goals and team objectives.
Required:
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field at an ABET-accredited University or NCEES equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge in Reports of Geotechnical Exploration.
  • Experience with Bently OpenRoads and MicroStation.
  • Experience in rock and soil logging, rock tunnel mapping, and subsurface investigations.
  • Experience in soils laboratory testing.
  • Experience in the architecture/engineering/construction management industry.

Compensation Range:

$35,035.00 - $46,713.00
