About the Position

This Civil Deputy County Attorney works within the Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in the Elections, Tax & Public Records Group. The successful candidate will counsel and advise County departments and elected officials regarding public records law. The attorney will manage client relationships, draft policies for compliance with public records law, and direct a team of paralegals and redaction specialists. The attorney may handle related litigation, draft motions and briefs, and handle court appearances as needed. Additionally, the attorney in this position may counsel clients regarding legal issues concerning tax appeals and election law. In this role, you will collaborate with other attorneys, legal assistants, and professional staff. The primary focus of this position will be public records law.

About the Civil Services Division

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including public records, tax and election law. We also provide legal advice to County officials on various public law topics. Additionally, we handle public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. The Civil Division has five practice groups: Election Law, Tax and Public Records; Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Regulatory Litigation, and Capital Public Records.

We Require

  • Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

  • Recent writing sample

Job Contributions

  • Perform complex legal work and analysis as it pertains to litigation issues involving the client

  • Conduct research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools

  • Handle a broad spectrum of civil claims as assigned by the Practice Group Leader, including advising government agencies

  • Draft various documents, including reports and updates, motions, memorandums, and various other court documents as necessary, in the areas of elections, tax, public records, and other County litigation

  • Attend court to present and defend the client at status conferences, oral arguments on motions, in evidentiary hearings, and other hearings as set by the court

  • Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

Working Conditions

  • Teleworking is available after a probationary period at the discretion of management and the needs of the office

  • Office and courtroom settings in high-volume, fast-paced environments with frequent stressful situations

  • May require extended periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about while performing duties

  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicles

  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
