General Summary:

The SMB Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of telecommunications services; video, and high-speed data for both business and residential customers.

This role encompasses in-field technical work, customer interaction, and support for various network technologies including IP telephony, Ethernet, and IPTV. The SMB technician ensures high-quality service delivery while meeting company standards and customer expectations.

Essential Job Functions:



  • Installs, repairs, and maintains equipment and devices for delivering Internet, Ethernet, IPTV, and voice services across copper, coax, and fiber delivery systems;
  • Performs all modifications, moves, adds, changes and installation of telephone and Internet services & devices for both business and residential accounts;
  • Performs high priority tasks for business and residential customers as determined by the market;
  • Locates trouble in Internet, IPTV, and telephone installations; repairs or replaces faults;
  • Uses tools such as signal level meters, OTDRs, and optical light testers to locate faults, perform splices, and verify network performance;
  • Performs drop and station wiring, install load coils, and manage color-coded cable pairs;
  • Grounds and bonds equipment and inside wiring to meet safety and operational standards;
  • Coordinates with repair, and other departments on service installations, changes to update billing, and central office records;
  • Takes part in the on-call rotation for after-hours service support;
  • Maintains safe work practices in accordance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards;
  • Travels to customer sites, project areas, business related events, and other Ritter Communications locations as required;
  • Other related duties and projects as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of basic electronics, specification sheets, and circuit diagrams;
  • Knowledge of basic switch gear such as Cisco, Aruba, and HPE;
  • Knowledge of Basic Ethernet and WiFi networks;
  • Knowledge of IP addressing scheme and how to deploy;
  • Knowledge of DHCP and understanding of how it works;
  • Knowledge of copper T568A & T568B wiring schemes, copper 25-pair color code, coax, and fiber optic cabling;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Windows OS;
  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment operations and maintenance;
  • Skill in operating service equipment including various hand tools, testing equipment, meters, and software for diagnostics;
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and operating and maintenance instruction manuals;
  • Ability to set up a basic secured WiFi network;
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions using information at hand;
  • Ability to effectively function as a team player;
  • Ability to analyze technical problems, redesign procedures, and implement solutions;
  • Ability to operate ladders, climb poles, work in aerial environments, and use bucket trucks when needed;
  • Ability to travel for business requirements; must possess a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.


Education and Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent plus two years of related job training and work experience in IT, networking, electronics, or telecommunications. Associates degree in a related field preferred.

Certifications such as Cisco CCENT, CompTia A+ and Net +, Microsoft Certifications, etc. helpful.
