That's why we're looking for a Conflicts Attorney to be responsible for facilitating the conflicts resolution process for new business, providing legal analysis of potential conflicts of interest to the Ethics Committee Chairperson and firm attorneys.

Please note, this position will support West Coast conflicts coverage. Therefore, the hours will be 11:00am-7:00pm or 10:30am-6:30pm.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for...



  • Analyzing conflicts for new clients, matters, and lateral hires using internal systems and external databases (e.g., Lexis, D&B, Hoovers)
  • Recommending conflict resolutions and coordinating with attorneys and clients on waivers and disclosures
  • Drafting and reviewing conflicts waivers and engagement letters in line with applicable ethical rules
  • Approving new matters following clearance; ensuring conflict issues are identified and resolved efficiently
  • Reviewing RFPs, FOIA responses, and deposition bookings for conflicts and ethical compliance
  • Reviewing and resolving conflicts for lateral candidates; drafting consent letters and coordinating with impacted attorneys
  • Documenting findings and escalating unresolved issues to firm leadership as needed
  • Reviewing Outside Counsel Guidelines (OCGs) for conflict-related provisions; advising on necessary updates to internal data
  • Addressing and troubleshooting OCG-related conflicts and ensuring accuracy of affiliate and subsidiary information
  • Recommending and managing implementation and updates of ethical screens
  • Staying current on legal ethics regulations and updating firm processes and databases accordingly
  • Providing training to legal staff on ethics and conflict procedures
  • Monitoring legal industry developments and firm dockets for potential conflicts or risk exposures


The successful candidate will demonstrate...



  • A Juris Doctor degree and active bar membership in state where working; must maintain active credit status for CLE or MCLE
  • A minimum of three years law practice experience
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state and municipal government organizational structures and advise Ethics Committee on conflict issues as they relate to firm clients and/or attorneys regarding government entities
  • Thorough understanding of conflicts of interest, including the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Ability to research, analyze, summarize and recommend conflict resolutions of actual and potential conflicts of interest to the Ethics Committee and legal staff
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to make persuasive arguments to varying levels within the organization; strong time management skills
  • Continual attention to detail in researching and analyzing potential conflicts of interest
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of responsibilities and the aptitude for effective and creative problem solving
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations with poise, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to participate in on call rotation and ability to respond via telephone to emergency after-hours conflicts checks


Pay Range for Candidates in Chicago:

$130,000 - $170,000 per year

The range provided is the minimum and maximum salary that Venable in good faith believes at the time of this posting that it is willing to pay for the advertised position. Exact compensation will be determined based on individual candidate qualifications and location.
