Job Overview

The Merchandising Intern participates in Macy's 8-week summer internship program, gaining exposure to consumer products, business strategies, and the latest trends across Macy's brand offerings. The Merchandising team maximizes sales and gross margin for each product category by identifying, procuring, and assorting the products customers demand.

The internship provides hands-on, in-depth experience in a core retail business function. Interns contribute directly to business outcomes, participate as active team members, and share innovative ideas. They also engage with Macy's culture through interactions with senior leaders, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities. High-performing interns may be considered for full-time roles through Macy's Executive Development Program. The internship is based in Macy's New York, New York corporate offices.

What You Will Do



  • Gain professional development through hands-on learning, structured workshops, and collaborative projects.
  • Build relationships with fellow interns, business leaders, and team colleagues.
  • Attend and participate in weekly business meetings to review and recap sales performance.
  • Analyze business performance metrics and make recommendations to maximize results based on trends.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop assortment strategies for key items and fashion.
  • Conduct competitive shopping to analyze pricing and trends.
  • Assist in creating purchase orders and track in-season receipts.
  • Resolve shipping issues with vendors as needed.
  • Maintain regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.


Skills You Will Need

Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills - Able to analyze business performance metrics, recognize trends and patterns, interpret financial information, and apply retail math to inform merchandising decisions.

Business Acumen & Decision-Making - Understands profitability, assortment planning, and financial performance metrics; applies strategies to solve complex problems and drive business results.

Communication & Influencing - Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to influence others, present insights effectively, and tell compelling stories.

Collaboration & Leadership - Able to work cross-functionally, build relationships with team members and business leaders, contribute to projects, and demonstrate leadership and team-building abilities.

Organizational & Multitasking Skills - Can independently prioritize a broad workload, manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines, streamline processes, and maintain high standards of accuracy.

Technical & Systems Proficiency - Proficient in Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, macros, formulas) preferred; able to run and interpret reports and utilize assigned system tools.

Attention to Detail & Accountability - Exhibits high standards of accuracy, accountability, and follow-through while processing information quickly and offering solutions to challenges.

Curiosity & Adaptability - Intellectual curiosity, quick learner, and adaptable to a fast-paced, dynamic retail environment.

Who You Are



  • Rising Seniors pursuing a bachelor's degree with strong academic performance are encouraged to apply. Minimum 3.0 GPA required.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
