We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lab Manager for the Anzell lab in the Department of Pediatrics. We focus on a genetic vascular disease called Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), where we use molecular and cellular biology, molecular genetic, and computational biology techniques to i) identify genetic variants that will lead to disease, ii) develop therapeutics to improve treatment for patients, and iii) eventually use gene editing to cure disease symptoms. The successful candidate will support laboratory operations, conduct experiments, and ensure the smooth functions of daily lab activities. JOB SUMMARY The Laboratory Manager oversees the daily operations, maintenance, and administration of one or more university laboratories. This role ensures that laboratories operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. The Laboratory Manager supports faculty, researchers, and students by maintaining equipment, managing inventory, training staff on safety procedures, and coordinating the use of laboratory resources. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages day-to-day operations of the core facility, including scheduling, coordination of services, and tracking usage Maintains an organized inventory of consumables, reagents, and supplies, placing orders as needed Develops and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment and lab processes Performs routine calibration and quality control checks on equipment to ensure accurate results Prepares reports on core activity, including usage metrics and performance indicators Ensures proper handling, storage, and disposal of biological samples and hazardous materials in compliance with safety standard Supports data transfer, cloud storage, and analytical software Provides training to users on proper equipment use, imaging techniques, and data acquisition protocols Troubleshoots issues with instrumentation and assist with minor repairs or liaise with service engineers for maintenance Collaborates with researchers to optimize protocols and provide technical assistance for specialized projects Advises users on sample preparation, experiment design, and data interpretation Maintains accurate records of lab activities, equipment usage, and service requests Assists with billing and invoicing for core services and usage Supports grant applications and reports related to core operations and upgrades Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, chemical handling, and equipment maintenance Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements (OSHA, EPA, NIH, etc.) Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities Problem-solving skills and technical aptitude for troubleshooting laboratory equipment Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with faculty, staff, students, and vendors Ability to train and mentor students and staff in safe and effective laboratory practices Ability to maintain accurate records, manage budgets, and prepare reports Proficiency with laboratory management software, Microsoft Office, and/or inventory systems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field Three or more years of related work experience hands-on experience in histology and microscopy
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree Experience in a core facility or shared resource lab Familiarity with compliance standards, including biosafety and chemical safety Knowledge of cost recovery models and experience with service billing systems
