JOB SUMMARY

The Tier 2 IT Specialist is responsible for network maintenance, troubleshooting, and support across multiple lab locations, while also serving as the escalation point for Tier 1 helpdesk issues. This role requires strong hands-on experience with firewalls, routers, switches, VLANs, Layer 3 devices, DNS, and DHCP, along with the flexibility to assist across all areas of IT. The successful candidate will help ensure that Microbac's IT infrastructure remains secure, reliable, and redundant, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term resiliency.

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience as a network technician or administrator, proven troubleshooting skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams in a multi-site environment. Familiarity with PBX/VoIP systems, VMware, Active Directory, and Group Policy is a plus. This is a remote position.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide Tier 1 support when needed, while primarily serving as the escalation point for Tier 2 issues.
  • Deliver exceptional end-user support, ensuring a smooth and productive IT experience.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot network infrastructure, including firewalls, routers, switches, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and Layer 3 devices.
  • Assist in designing and implementing redundant and resilient network solutions across multiple lab locations.
  • Support and maintain Windows domain environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, and networked services.
  • Monitor and manage Microsoft 365 services, including SharePoint, Defender, licensing, and email security.
  • Assist with Intune, Entra ID (Azure AD), and Autopilot deployments as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and support hardware issues, including desktops, laptops, servers, and peripherals (printers, scanners, label printers).
  • Collaborate with vendors to resolve issues related to PBX/VoIP phone systems.
  • Monitor and respond to security alerts, including endpoint protection and vulnerability scans.
  • Automate IT tasks using PowerShell or similar scripting tools to improve workflows and reduce manual intervention.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and self-help resources.
  • Provide technical training to end-users.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across multiple departments to resolve escalated support issues.
  • Provide occasional on-site IT support at lab locations (<20% travel).
  • Set a positive example through high standards and professional conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 3-5 years of experience in a Network Technician, System Administrator, or Tier 2 support role.
  • Strong understanding of network fundamentals and the OSI model.
  • Hands-on experience with firewalls, routers, switches, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and Layer 3 devices.
  • Familiarity with routing and switching technologies, such as VLANs, STP, NAT, routing tables, and sub interfaces.
  • Basic understanding of IPv4/IPv6 addressing, subnetting (CIDR/VLSM), and DNS/DHCP services.
  • Ability to use common network troubleshooting tools (ping, traceroute, ipconfig, netstat, Wireshark, cable testers, Wi-Fi analyzers).
  • Experience supporting Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Solid troubleshooting skills across network, system, and end-user support areas.
  • Experience with hardware support, including desktops, laptops, servers, and peripherals (printers, scanners, label printers).
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware issues, including replacements and rebuilds.
  • Familiarity with scripting/automation tools (PowerShell or similar).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies.
  • Self-starter with a proactive mindset, constantly looking for ways to improve IT processes.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with a focus on delivering high-quality end-user support and training.
  • Willingness to travel to lab locations as needed (<20%).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with network monitoring tools.
  • Exposure to compliance frameworks (PCI DSS, GDPR, or similar) that impact network security.
  • Experience supporting multi-site or distributed IT environments.
  • Familiarity with PBX/VoIP phone systems (Cisco Unified Communications or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with VMware or other virtualization technologies.
  • Exposure to Intune, Entra ID (Azure AD), and Autopilot for endpoint management.
  • Knowledge of IT security practices, including redundancy planning, vulnerability management, and endpoint protection.
  • Experience documenting network diagrams, processes, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with cross-functional IT and business teams on projects and escalations.
  • Prior experience in regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, laboratory, or financial environments) is a plus.
