Overview

The Vice President, Nursing, will engage in activities to enable excellence in the areas of clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and engagement at UPH-DM. Under the direction of the Market Chief Nursing Officer, the Vice President, Nursing will ensure that nursing operational performance and clinical quality are consistent with the strategic goals of the UnityPoint Health nursing enterprise. Additional responsibilities of the Vice President, Nursing include service line oversight as assigned; creation, development, and implementation of projects/programs; and support of professional practice and collaboration among health care providers, employees and community leaders.

Responsibilities
  • As part of the Market Leadership Team, pursues top decile performance in quality, patient safety, and patient experience for the local market. With a focus on execution, creates accountability for results within the market and builds the discipline and capacity to achieve results.
  • Collaborates with the CNO to drive patient care transformation and influence understanding of rationale for changes as well as the connection to UPH strategic goals. Utilizes a data informed approach with a keen focus on the benefit to the patient first and team second. Recognizes and employs strategies that foster adoption of change, removes barriers, and accelerates outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the CNO to drive operational execution including but not limited to quality, patient safety, patient experience, budgetary responsibility, regulatory compliance, staffing, patient throughput, administrative on-call duties, and other identified priorities.
  • Promotes the use of management system standardized tools and methods to drive excellence and build sustainability for continuous improvement.
  • Understands and assures compliance with UnityPoint Health system policies, as well as UPH-DM market policies.
  • Works collaboratively with the Market Chief Nursing Officer and other nursing leaders to execute on the nursing strategic plan; monitor progress toward goals and implement corrective action plans as appropriate.
  • Works with the Market Chief Nursing Officer and Human Resources professionals to create strategies to recruit and retain the best nursing and nursing support staff, including the evaluation of nurse engagement strategies at the unit and service line level.
  • Represents the Market Chief Nursing Officer at meetings, presentations and community events as assigned. May be assigned as the operational administrator at developmental meetings in place of the Chief Nursing Officer.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Preferred or Specialized

Education:

* BSN

* MSN, MBA, or health related master's degree

* Coursework in healthcare finance, strategic planning, and continuous quality improvement.

Experience:

* Five years leadership experience at the Director level or above.

* Knowledge of healthcare governance, administration, and delivery of healthcare services.

* Nursing leadership experience within a large system with multiple campuses/hospitals.

* Participation in a professional organization

Experience working in a labor union environment

License(s)/Certification(s):

* Valid State of Iowa RN License

* Certification in nursing administration required or commitment to complete certification within one year.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

* Demonstrated experience as an excellent communicator and developer of people and programs.

Other:

* Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
