GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist is responsible for supporting or leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental, health and safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations. The position has three progressive levels, Specialist I, II, and III, each with increasing responsibility, from tactical execution and inspection (Level 1) to regulatory analysis and program ownership (Level III).

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I

• Performs duties under the guidance of senior EHS staff or EHS Manager.
• Responsible for conducting EHS inspections of departments and facilities, documenting any deficiencies and tracking corrective actions to completion.
• Responsible for establishing and conducting safety meetings (to include written agendas and meeting minutes.
• Complies with all company policies and business procedures.
• Interacts with all levels of personnel, primarily with department supervisors, managers, executives, and Human Resources representatives.
• Supports company compliance with customer ground and flight safety procedures. (DCMA INST 8210.1C)
• Monitors the required certifications and training for employees.
• Develops and delivers EHS training to employees. May include, but is not limited to:

• Overhead Crane and Hoist Operation

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II

• Works independently to resolve moderately complex EHS compliance issues.
• Works with department managers and Human Resources personnel to investigate employee reports of safety concerns or violations as directed.
• Tracks, organizes, and updates compliance calendar, and ensures timely renewal of regulatory permits.
• Analyzes new material SDSs for VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) contents and ensures the material is compliant with applicable regulations. Inputs the VOC content in the appropriate line in the ERP system for the part.
• Analyzes new safety data sheets (SDSs) for all hazards and ensures adequate personnel protective equipment (PPE) is in place and that the hazards are communicated appropriately.
• Ensures that volatile organic compound (VOC) usage tracking process is accurate and being reported correctly.
• Runs VOC usage reports, prints data, analyzes and organizes data, and files reports in a manner to be ready to present to the air inspector at any time. Monitors total air pollutant emissions to track if permitting thresholds are being approached.
• Oversees storm water pollution prevention plan, ensures monitoring is completed and facility remains in compliance. (If applicable)

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist III

• Reports on employee safety related issues directly to the Human Resources department.
• Responsible for the development, updating, implementation, and filing with specific agencies, required company health and safety program, as needed. iResponsible for EHS written procedures, manuals, and maintaining other documentation, as required. This includes, but is not limited to:




• Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
• Respiratory Protection Program
• Hazardous Communication Plan
• Safety Data Sheets

• Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal
• Storm Water and Wastewater (If applicable)

• EHS Inspections and Corrective Actions




• Coordinates the required certifications and training for employees.
• Ensures Kratos procedures are compliant with the following:




• State and US EPA Regulations including air, water and waste
• Local regulations including air, water and waste as applicable
• Local fire department regulations
• Hazardous materials regulations
• US and State OSHA regulations




• Track injuries, investigate causes, and coordinate any necessary corrective actions, as directed.
• Tracks total recordable injury rate (TRIR) to report to management in support of company EHS goals, when necessary.
• Recommends funding changes, capital projects, and opportunities for more effective safety and environmental methods, as needed.
• Understands, interprets, and analyzes regulatory and/or legal EHS requirements to ensure company is always compliant. May need to advise management on recommendations to implement or change current policies, practices, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Prepares and briefs management on safety and environmental compliance issues as assigned.
• Collaborates with department managers and personnel to analyze safety needs. Implements appropriate and compliant measures (i.e.: personal protective equipment, chemical storage, etc.).
• Partners with Human Resources to address workplace injuries and illnesses when appropriate, conduct post-incident investigations, and recommend corrective and preventative measures, as directed.
• Collaborate with production operations management to review process changes, new equipment, and increased production to ensure that all regulations are followed and that all necessary permits are obtained.
• Acts as the primary interface with EHS regulatory agencies; federal, state, and local including customer safety representatives, as required.

• Familiar with the preparation of OHSA 300 logs and reporting.

• Demonstrates communication and teamwork skills with customers, co-workers and subcontractors to express ideas and safety concepts and solve problems.
• Valid driveris license.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Each successive level of Environmental Health and Safety Specialist builds on the identified typical qualifications listed for the previous level(s).

Required:

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I

• Bacheloris Degree in relevant fields such as Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related discipline (or equivalent work experience).
• Minimum of 1-3 years of directly related experience in Environmental Health and Safety Compliance in a manufacturing workplace.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II

• DOD 4145.26 Contactor Explosives Safety Certification required or the ability to obtain.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of directly related experience in Environmental Health and Safety Compliance in a manufacturing workplace.

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist III

• Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience in Environmental Health and Safety Compliance in a manufacturing workplace.
• 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification required or ability to obtain.

Preferred:

• Relevant professional certifications and experience are desirable (CSP, ASP, CSHM, CIH).

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Office and or manufacturing environment.
• Standing, walking, lifting, bending, carrying, sitting, computer keyboarding, analytical thinking, reading, writing.
• May be required to work extended hours and/or weekends.
• Ability to work in a non-temperature-controlled environment.
• Employee may generate, handle, manage, or work around hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
• May be required to lift up to 50 pounds in accordance with KUAS General Safety Training guidelines.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

• 10-50% May be required between other KUAS locations and vendor sites.
