Exciting Opportunity

Senior Director, Finance & Assistant Controller:

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director, Finance & Assistant Controller to join our Finance leadership team. In this high-impact role, you'll oversee tax compliance, drive strategic financial initiatives, and partner across the enterprise on projects that shape the future of healthcare and research. From managing philanthropic funds to leading cross-functional collaborations, this is a chance to make a meaningful difference while navigating complex financial challenges.

Position Overview:

  • This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations for tax-exempt entities, while also leading high-impact projects spanning financial strategy, operational improvements, joint ventures, real estate ventures, academic/industry collaborations, and regulatory matters.

  • Oversee accounting and reporting for philanthropic funds, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and GAAP standards.

  • Provide strategic oversight of financial reporting and audits for MSK's pension and retirement plans.

  • Partner closely with Development to ensure accurate gift and pledge reporting.

  • Collaborate with external auditors, actuaries, advisors, and legal counsel to ensure compliance and effective decision-making.

  • Foster a culture of continuous development, knowledge sharing, and excellence within the Finance team.

Key Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of accounting, auditing, or finance experience with a major public accounting firm or equivalent.

  • Deep knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and income & payroll tax applicable to tax-exempt organizations.

  • Proven experience in tax compliance, including IRS regulations, UBIT, sales and use taxes, payroll-related taxes, and international reporting.

  • Demonstrated expertise with financial systems and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to guide, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.

Core Skills:

  • Technical Tax Expertise: Mastery of IRS compliance (Forms 990, 990-T, 4720), UBIT management, tax-exempt bond compliance, and international tax reporting.

  • Strategic Financial Leadership: Experience leading enterprise-wide initiatives including partnerships, joint ventures, cost allocation strategies, and regulatory compliance.

  • Operational Excellence: Skilled in financial reporting for philanthropic funds, retirement plans, and defined benefit/contribution plans in compliance with GAAP, FASB, ERISA, DOL, and IRS.

  • Collaborative Project Management: Ability to work across functions with Legal, Research Administration, HR, Development, and Facilities to assess and support organizational initiatives.

  • Team Leadership: Strong people leadership, employee engagement, and talent development skills to foster collaboration and high performance.

Additional Information: Hybrid, onsite at our NYC locations as needed for collaborative meetings
