Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Office of International Students and Scholars provides services for international students and scholars, including international student recruitment, immigration advising, personal support, cross-cultural programs and events. The Temporary Advisor for Visiting International Students advises all short-term and visiting international students ( VIS) at UNCW. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Administers UNCW's Visiting International Student (VIS) program.
  • Utilizes Slate and Terra Dotta to process applications, issues immigration documents, and ensures compliance with Department of State and Department of Homeland Security regulations.
  • Serves as academic adviser to approximately 250 Visiting International Students each year.
  • Develops, markets and coordinates inbound summer visiting international student programs.
  • Assists with international student orientations, events, and programs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Two plus years of experience in student advising, immigration advising, or program coordination
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently
  • Able to plan and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to occasionally work nights and weekends


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • International student/scholar advising experience
  • Knowledge of SEVIS and J and F regulations
  • Proficiency in a language in addition to English
  • Knowledge of foreign higher education systems
  • Experience with Terra Dotta & Slate

Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
