Description

Analyzes samples to quantify chemical composition in accordance with National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) and South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SC DES) standards and in compliance with EPA regulations. This is an experienced level position so previous lab experience is a MUST. Pay range is between $22.00-$25.00/hour DOE.

Essential Functions



  • Ensure that all samples received by the laboratory are logged in according to the appropriate
    procedure including labeling, logging, and acknowledging.
  • Ensure instrumentation is running, troubleshoot issues, and make or coordinate repairs as
    needed.
  • Perform analysis as requested on the required turnaround times.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and glassware.
  • Maintain inventory of standards and supplies; order replacements as needed.
  • Ensure all analysis is performed within the specifications of the appropriate SOP.
  • Provide SOP updates and details for corrective actions as needed.
  • Report non-conformances to the QAM and Laboratory Manager.
  • Utilize laboratory information management system (LIMS) functions, including generating work lists, obtaining, and updating project status, and ensuring reported data is properly qualified.
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned.


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Other Physical Sciences as approved.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in general chemistry laboratory, or 1 years' experience in an appropriate similar laboratory (i.e. air lab experience for air labs, water experience for water Metals Laboratory Analyst I 2 labs etc.).
  • Familiarity with various sample methods.
  • Detailed knowledge of EPA Methodology - Specifically the following list:

    • EPA Method 29, 306, SW-846 0060 & 0061
    • EPA Method 5, 17, 201A, 202, 200.8, 6020, 245.1, 1631
    • Functional operational knowledge of CVAAS, ICP/OES, ICP/MS





Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office programs, including Work, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, both with internal customers and external vendors.
  • Ability to accurately read, write, and interpret laboratory documents.
  • Professional behavior and appearance.
  • Ability to be organized and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, follow up on pending issues, meet deadlines and work independently.
  • General familiarity with laboratory safety, previous laboratory experience preferred.


Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a laboratory setting.

Physical Demands



  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Sitting for extended periods and the use of hands to finger is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is helpful for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents.
  • Duties frequently involve repetitive motions and eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • While performing the duties of this job, good manual dexterity for the use of laboratory equipment is needed.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, grasp, and feel. Occasional heavy lifting is expected.
  • Exertion of up to 30 lbs. of force may occasionally be required.
  • Use of applicable Personal Protective Equipment is mandatory.
