Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Navy Data Subject Matter Expert (SME) to oversee and guide the design, development, and deployment of an AI/ML project in support of Navy mission objectives. This role requires deep expertise in Navy data systems, processes, and mission environments, paired with the ability to ensure AI/ML solutions are aligned with operational needs, security standards, and program goals. The SME will serve as the critical bridge between Navy stakeholders, technical teams, and leadership to ensure data-driven solutions deliver meaningful mission impact.

As with any position, additional expectations exist. Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary Navy data SME guiding AI/ML solution development and implementation
  • Provide oversight of data integration, curation, and governance to ensure accuracy, compliance, and mission relevance
  • Translate Navy mission requirements and operational use cases into actionable AI/ML technical objectives
  • Guide engineers and data scientists on the application of AI/ML to Navy-specific data sets, ensuring results are practical and mission-ready
  • Evaluate and recommend AI/ML tools, frameworks, and approaches best suited for Navy data and environments
  • Ensure solutions adhere to DoD and Navy security, compliance, and performance standards
  • Mentor project team members on Navy data considerations, mission context, and operational relevance of AI/ML solutions
  • Provide senior-level briefings, reports, and technical documentation to leadership and stakeholders

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Data Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline)
  • 7+ years of experience working with Navy or DoD data systems, architectures, and operational workflows
  • Demonstrated ability to translate mission requirements into actionable data and analytics strategies
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, pipelines, and their application to mission data
  • Knowledge of Navy/DoD data governance, compliance, and security standards
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to work a hybrid schedule
  • If applicable: If you are or have been recently employed by the U.S. government, a post-employment ethics letter will be required if employment with VSolvit is offered
  • U.S. Citizenship Required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Data Science, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in Navy or defense environments, with a focus on data-driven decision support or advanced analytics
  • Prior leadership or oversight of AI/ML, advanced analytics, or digital transformation projects
  • Familiarity with MLOps practices, cloud environments, and model lifecycle management
  • Deep understanding of cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, RMF, FedRAMP) as applied to Navy/DoD data
  • Master's degree in Data Science, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in Navy or defense environments, with a focus on data-driven decision support or advanced analytics
