The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. Essential Job Duties
Join the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine's General Hospital (GH) team and make a meaningful impact on the lives of companion animals and the people who care for them. The General Hospital is the central hub for stable inpatient care within the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center, offering exposure to a wide range of medical and surgical cases.
As a Veterinary Technician, you'll play an essential role in providing exceptional nursing care and treatment for hospitalized small animal patients. Working alongside clinicians, residents, interns, students, and fellow technicians, you'll perform hands-on clinical work such as IV catheter placement, medication administration, post-surgical monitoring, and specialized treatment procedures. You'll also ensure accurate medical documentation, maintain a clean and safe hospital environment, and help teach and mentor veterinary students in proper patient care techniques. Additionally, this job involves lifting up to 50 pounds and working safely around anesthetic gases, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care for hospitalized small animals, including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, and wound management.
  • Monitor and care for post-anesthetic and post-surgical patients, ensuring safe recovery and appropriate pain management.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment such as IV fluid pumps, syringe pumps, and monitoring devices.
  • Admit patients and communicate care plans with clinicians, students, and clients; accurately document treatments and diagnostics in the hospital system.
  • Support hospital operations by maintaining a clean and safe work environment, following infection control, OSHA, and radiation safety policies.
  • Assist in training, orienting, and mentoring new staff, students, interns, and residents in hospital procedures and standards of care.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in continuing education and safety trainings as required.
  • May be required to work beyond scheduled hours, including weekends or holidays, to meet patient care needs.

Qualifications






Minimum Experience/Education
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing nursing care to canine and feline patients in a veterinary hospital, preferably within a teaching or specialty care environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with patient monitoring and medical equipment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-based clinical setting.
  • Strong communication, professionalism, and problem-solving skills with a commitment to supporting a teaching environment.
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
