Job Summary

The duration of this assignment will be approximately 5-6 months; possible extension. Work occurs at multiple sites including Parnassus, Mission Bay, Oakland/Emeryville, Mt. Zion, and other community partners. Workday schedule 8am - 5pm.

The APeX/Epic Trainer will work in collaboration with the Workforce Development team and APeX/Epic application teams to develop a curriculum to provide training support to a variety of end users including front-end users participating in UCSF workforce development programs. These participants will be internal and external to UCSF and include various age demographics including high school aged youth (14 - 18 years old). This position will focus on training and supporting APeX/Epic applications as a UCSF Credentialed Trainer, focusing on the Cadence series. Trainers may work in multiple locations including all San Francisco UCSF locations, Benioff Children's Hospital-Oakland, and community affiliate partners in the San Francisco area.

The APeX Trainer must be Epic proficient with certification in Cadence or other Epic applications; or Epic proficient with credentialing in Cadence from another healthcare organization within the past 3 years. The Apex Trainer must achieve credentialing in Cadence through UCSF within a designated timeframe, in order to support ongoing new hire training and other training initiatives as needed.


Duties to include:

Conduct training for workforce development participants, including high school students, in APeX Cadence workflows and processes.

  • Deliver engaging, accessible training tailored to varying levels of technical experience.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that emphasizes encouragement, belonging, and respect.
  • Use interactive methods to build participant confidence and promote practical skill application.
Develop and adapt training materials to meet participant needs and learning styles.
  • Modify course materials and lesson plans to ensure accessibility for diverse learners.
  • Create supplemental resources (tips & tricks, job aids) that reinforce learning.
Provide technical assistance and identify skill gaps.
  • Offer one-on-one support during and outside of training sessions.
  • Assess participant progress, identify technical skill gaps, and provide constructive feedback for growth.
  • Troubleshoot participant issues with APeX Cadence and escalate when necessary.
Collaborate with workforce development and learning teams.
  • Partner with Workforce Development (WFD), Learning & Organizational Development (L&OD), and APeX training staff to align curriculum and training strategies.
  • Share observations and recommendations to improve participant outcomes.
  • Model professionalism, diplomacy, and inclusivity in all communications.
Support classroom logistics.
  • Prepare training environments and assist with setup for in-person or hybrid classes.
  • Test and validate training materials and systems.
  • Conduct quality checks on lesson plans, sandbox environments, and technical tools.
  • Facilitate refresher and skills-enhancement sessions post-training.
  • Offer targeted follow-up support to reinforce skills and ensure participant readiness for real-world application.
Promote participant engagement and sense of belonging.
  • Encourage participation and celebrate milestones to build confidence and community among trainees.
  • Proactively address barriers to learning and create an inclusive environment for all participants.

The UCSF Workforce Development Department is part of the larger UCSF Learning & Organization Development Department, which oversees the creation and implementation of learning solutions for all UCSF teammates, managers and executives, as well some faculty who perform operational roles or impact operational processes. The purpose of the L&OD department is to lead talent development strategies which inspire professional excellence and attract, develop, and retain outstanding & diverse people, who together advance health worldwide.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience/training
  • Must be one of the following:
    • Epic proficient with certification in Cadence, or
    • Epic proficient with certification in other Epic applications, or
    • Or Epic proficient with previous credentialing in Cadence by another healthcare organization within the past 3 years.
  • Ability to achieve UCSF credentialing in Cadence within a designated timeframe.
  • Three years' experience delivering content in a training position.
  • Strong problem-resolution skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively, train, support, and work collaboratively with users of clinical information systems at all professional and technical levels.
  • Detail oriented, with proven organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and see projects through to completion on deadline.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to convey technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical applications users in a specific, clear, and concise manner.
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge in documentation and reporting, with the ability to design and execute tests, analyze system performance data, and produce substantive reports and analyses.
  • Three years related work experience.

  • Epic Certification in Cadence.
  • Epic Certification in other applications.
  • Experience training in EPIC / APeX Cadence
