Volunteer Coordinator - Illinois CancerCare

At Illinois CancerCare, we're seeking a dedicated and compassionate Volunteer Coordinator to lead and grow our volunteer program. In this vital role, you'll oversee all aspects of volunteer engagement-from recruitment and training to scheduling and recognition-ensuring our volunteers provide meaningful support to cancer patients and their families. You'll collaborate closely with clinical staff to match volunteers with roles that enhance patient comfort and care, making a real difference in the lives of those navigating their cancer journey.

This position is 25 hours per week with no nights, weekends or major holidays, offering a healthy work-life balance. Sample work schedule Monday - Friday 8 am to 1pm.

Hiring pay range: $20 - 24 per hour

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and coordinate volunteers to support patients and clinic operations.
  • Maintain onboarding files, background checks, and training documentation for all volunteers.
  • Develop and update the volunteer handbook and training materials.
  • Oversee volunteer activities including patient assistance, waiting room upkeep, beverage stations, and transportation between pods.
  • Manage the Pet Therapy program and schedule therapy dog visits.
  • Track volunteer hours and maintain department budget; provide monthly reports.
  • Coordinate thank-you notes and correspondence for donations and gifts.
  • Collaborate with the ILCC Foundation to ensure proper use of funding.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and volunteer uniforms.
  • Host and schedule outside groups/individuals donating to ILCC.
  • Construct patient folders and fulfill supply requests from departments.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, patients, and families while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulatory policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Excellent communication skills and a compassionate, patient-centered approach.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage people, tasks, and schedules effectively.
  • Proficient computer skills, especially in maintaining records and entering data in spreadsheets.
  • Ability to build and maintain respectful, professional relationships with volunteers, staff, and patients.
  • Experience managing budgets and providing financial reports.
  • Comfortable coordinating and leading quarterly volunteer meetings.
  • Ability to enforce guidelines with confidence and professionalism, including those related to Pet Therapy volunteers.
  • Ability to gain respect and trust from volunteers, staff, and patients.
  • Thick skin and emotional resilience to handle sensitive situations and feedback.
  • Must be able to drive to clinic locations as needed.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers or working in a healthcare setting is a plus.

The position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. The position requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. The employee occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. The position requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

Work Environment:

The work environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment. Work will involve in-person interaction with co-workers, volunteers, and management. Work will require travel by automobile to clinic sites.
