Preferred Qualifications |
* 5 or more years of experience in commercial outdoor sign production
* 5 or more years of experience in graphics and production and installation of signage
* 2 years of experience training, supervising, and directing current or new employee work
* Customer service experience and a service-oriented demeanor.
* Knowledge of safe operation and associated personal protective equipment to use when operating power and hand tools typically used in outdoor sign production.
* Adobe Creative Cloud experience
* Gerber software experience
* Some experience with Google Maps

Position Summary |
The position is a technical and manual labor position under general supervision with outdoor sign production, and maintenance responsibilities as it pertains to signage for a large campus under general supervision. This position will fulfill orders to fabricate and install signs for
UGA and extension campuses, including but not limited to sign assembly, transportation, installation, and lettering of metal, plastic and wood signs, and mixing concrete for the installation of signs. This position will use power and hand tools safely in the completion of this work, as well as instruct Sign Shop Technician I and II on safe and proper use. Promote proper wearing and utilization of all
PPE safety gear for the Sign Shop team. This position will direct, supervise, and guide sign shop employees' work in the absence of Sign Shop supervisor. This position will report, repair/replace damaged or missing traffic control signage, (stop signs, pedestrian crossing signs) on campus. This position will work with other Facilities Management Division (
FMD) shops to facilitate the production of
UGA campus standard signage. This position will use software for creation of sign specifications (for other
FMD shops-sheet metal, paint) setting type, production and application of vinyl lettering while confirming the accuracy of the message contained in the sign. In some cases, this position will direct and guide the work of others as it relates to signage. The position will clean, straighten, maintain, and repair existing signs, do letter and logo installation for glass doors and install traffic signs and delineators. This position will mark sign sites for utility locates and then perform requests for utility locates online. This position will secure all tools and vehicles at the end of the workday and report if any shop equipment or vehicles require maintenance to the Sign Shop supervisor. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Knowledge of standard practices, material, methods, and equipment used in a shop which produces outdoor signs.
- Positive & friendly attitude
- Experience with proficient and safe use of power and hand tools.
- Leadership skills
- High level of spelling and grammar ability for proof-reading signs for accurate content.
- Vinyl sign-making skills including the ability to peel and apply vinyl letters and logos as per specifications.
- Advanced eye-hand coordination
- Advanced communication skills, verbal and written to interact with customers and to be capable of discerning sign copy accuracy
- Ability to work from diagrams, sketches, and oral and written instructions
- Ability to communicate via text, phone and email
- Advanced customer service skills with a service-oriented demeanor.
- Experience with software used to create and apply vinyl graphics
- Familiarity with Gerber Omega software would be ideal
- Ability to work well with people of all levels, such faculty, staff, and students.

- Fulfill work orders accessed on the online Aim system assigned by Shop Supervisor
- Assist supervisor in assessing needed:
- outdoor sign maintenance: cleaning, straightening, maintaining and repairing existing signs in the field.
- Vandalism control: remove graffiti, added stickers, and adhesive residue. Remove damaged signs/replace as needed.
- Traffic control devices: report, repair, install or replace missing or damaged signs, traffic delineators, and crosswalk markers (stop signs, pedestrian crossing signs) on campus.
- Direct and assign work of the Tech I and II in the field, as well as perform the work as needed with the Sign Shop team
- Direct and assign work of the Tech I and II in the absence of the Shop Supervisor
- Use power and hand tools safely in the completion of this work, as well as instruct Sign Shop Technician I and II on safe and proper use. Promote proper wearing and utilization of all PPE safety gear for the Sign Shop team.
- Letter and logo installation for glass doors.
- Mark sign sites for utility locates and then request utility locates online.
- Check with supervisor for exact site location then show & guide other shops the sites and parameters for pavement coring when needed for sign installation.

- In shop duties: Ongoing proper storing & maintaining of tools.
- Maintain tidy work area. Advise Supervisor when vehicles need maintenance.
- Inventory: Advise Supervisor when sign-making supplies are low, tools are broken, or items need to be replaced.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of recycled signs and traffic signs.
- Move and store signs without damaging (scratches/dents/bend corners). Report daily activities/job status & completions to supervisor before close of each day.
