Position description

Marshall Lab - Junior Specialist

Biochemistry and Biophysics

UC San Francisco

Will carry out mathematical analysis of mitochondrial network structure and dynamics, using tools of algebraic graph theory and statistical mechanics, with a focus on determining how mitochondrial dynamic processes like fission and fusion give rise to the distribution of observed network morphologies. This work will entail using extremal graph theory for multigraphs as well as tools from abstract algebra to investigate conditions under which a mitochondrial network is dominated by a single giant connected component, and to characterize the groupoid structure that describes both single and multiple connected components of mitochondrial networks. In addition to the abstract mathematical component, the work will also involve incorporating published data on mitochondrial graph structures and simulating distributions of network morphologies by random walks along a groupoid transition diagram.

Required Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in applied mathematics or mathematics or at least four years of research experience.
  • Experience representing mitochondrial morphology using graph theory and especially algebraic approaches, as well as understanding of groupoids and with writing software to simulate mitochondrial graph dynamics.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000-$58,600.
