Overview

The Marketing Strategist is a part of the University Marketing Communications department, and is a crucial member of the Account Services team. The University Marketing Communications department is responsible for raising the profile of the University of Minnesota and promoting University initiatives, education, research and community engagement. The Account Services team facilitates projects and provides strategic direction in collaboration with partners across the University to advance and promote University initiatives.

The Marketing Strategist will play an essential role in supporting and advancing the reputation of the University of Minnesota as a strategic marketing project lead, collaborating with clients and teams to plan, execute, and measure marketing initiatives. The role combines project management with marketing expertise to ensure alignment with brand standards and University priorities.

This is a hybrid position with occasional in-office work expected.

Job Duties
Marketing and Branding Strategy 45%

  • Determines appropriate channels to fulfill a marketing business need or address the identified marketing challenge.
  • Consults with units on their marketing plans.
  • Supports and assists Account Services Director on key marketing initiatives.
  • Assists with and maintains marketing programs.
  • Assists with developing marketing plans and presentations on brand and marketing initiatives.
  • Maintains a dedication to the University's goals that encourage equity and diversity.
  • Promotes the University's brand standards

Marketing Project Management 40%

  • Works with collaborators and clients to assemble and document project requirements.
  • Responsible for translating requirements into project brief and leading project team meetings.
  • Applies marketing expertise to projects to ensure they align with marketing standard processes.
  • Provides strategic marketing direction to ensure content, design, and development meet project and client needs and leverage brand assets.
  • Determines appropriate channels to fulfill a marketing business need or address the identified marketing challenge
  • Communicates project progress with U-Marcomm team leaders; collects feedback and approvals.
  • Identifies and resolves barriers to meeting project objectives.
  • Tracks marketing project process in tool, providing status reports through marketing project life cycle.
  • Works with the Measurement and Analytics team to establish metrics and develop marketing project reports.
  • Establishes strong working relationships and regular contact with University communicators and external entities.

Professional Development 10%

  • Completes professional development, education, and training activities, consistent with being responsible for the responsibilities of the position. Completes continued learning and development appropriate to work duties and for the pursuit of individual, unit, and institutional success.
  • Stays current on marketing strategy, project management, and technology trends.

Other duties as assigned 5%

  • Assists with other marketing and digital projects as they arise.
Qualifications

Required:

  • BA/BS degree
  • Six years of professional marketing/digital communications experience, including coordinating multidimensional marketing communications projects
  • Occasional in-office work expected, including for semi-annual team meetings
  • Outstanding project management skills and decision making

Preferred:

  • BA/BS degree in communications, journalism, marketing, art or related field
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in informal and formal teams with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Ability to facilitate work of various departments to accomplish common goals
  • Very detailed oriented
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $82,000 - $87,000 annually, depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 100% Appointment
