The Security Operations Manager, reporting directly to IT leadership and working under the guidance of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), leads the design, implementation, and management of our credit union's IT security and data protection systems. This role collaborates across departments to assess risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and protect member data and technology assets. The position directly manages the Security Operations, Security Engineering, and Identity Governance Administration (IGA) teams, driving operational excellence, continuous improvement, and proactive incident prevention and response.

Work Arrangement: This position is a hybrid or onsite role. A minimum of 1 day/week is required at our East Lansing, MI headquarters office, in addition to selected candidate must reside within the State of Michigan.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm ET

An offer of employment with MSU Federal Credit Union and affiliates is contingent upon the agreed work arrangement (onsite/hybrid/remote) and work location. MSU Federal Credit Union may or may not be able to accommodate temporary or permanent changes to work arrangements or allow employment outside the city and/or state of residency in which the new hire resides at the time of offered employment.

Compensation & Benefits:



  • Salary:

    • Security Operations Manager I - $115,000-145,000+, dependent on experience
    • Sr. Security Operations Manager - $130,000-165,000+, dependent on experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities -



  • Security Operations Manager:

    • Ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability of member data and critical applications across the credit union.
    • Lead, mentor, and develop the Information Security teams - including hiring, coaching, performance evaluations, and career growth.
    • Manage daily team operations: staffing, scheduling, training, security support, and performance tracking.
    • Oversee all security projects, ensuring adherence to credit union policies and change management protocols.
    • Facilitate team meetings and deliver clear presentations to stakeholders at all levels.
    • Maintain and enhance the Information Security program to meet evolving regulatory requirements and industry standards.
    • Promote security awareness and best practices organization-wide through training and engagement initiatives.
    • Collaborate with auditors and examiners to validate compliance with laws, regulations, and internal policies.
    • Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned.


  • Senior Security Operations Manager:

    • All duties and responsibilities required of a Security Operations Manager.
    • Develop and execute multi-year security strategies aligned with credit union goals, under the guidance of the CISO.
    • Lead complex, cross-functional IT projects independently, coordinating across stakeholders.
    • Drive process improvements to boost team efficiency and department effectiveness.
    • Mentor other managers in leadership, project management, and security best practices.
    • Build partnerships with industry and community organizations to support the credit union's mission.




Job Requirements -



  • Security Operations Manager:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Associate's degree in computer science or related field plus 10 or more years IT experience, or bachelor's degree plus 5 years or more years of experience.
    • Strong communicator, able to explain complex security concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Deep knowledge of network protocols, security engineering, threat landscapes, and data protection principles.
    • Understanding of credit union operations and regulatory environment.
    • Proven project management skills for managing diverse and complex initiatives.
    • Willingness to support critical system recovery efforts outside regular hours as needed.


  • Senior Security Operations Manager:

    • Bachelor's degree and 15 or more years of related experience or equivalent education and work history.
    • Track record of managing enterprise-wide projects impacting employees, processes, and members.
    • Expertise in vendor evaluation and technology selection aligned with strategic goals.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of credit union products, services, and IT-related compliance requirements.
    • Ability to provide timely interim solutions while addressing complex problems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment -



  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment, and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of an office area.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous conditions, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure.
  • Frequently moves equipment or materials weighing up to 25 pounds for transport between areas of buildings.
  • This position can work in a hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
