Job Description

Materials Control Lab Manager

Overall Responsibilities:

The MCL Manager is responsible to manage the daily activities of the MCL, direct the metallographers and chemists, develop and meet the MCL primary goals, develop the MCL budget and meet customer requirements while serving as a technical consultant to other plants and divisions.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develops primary goals, operation plans, policies and short and long range objectives for the MCL
  • Directs and coordinates activities to achieve continuous improvement, client satisfaction and reduce MCL cost.
  • Maintains industry required registrations (i.e. Nadcap, ISO 17025)
  • Develops and manages annual budget
  • Establishes MCL organization structure and delegates authority to subordinates
  • Determines action plan to address needs of all stakeholders
  • Reviews customer specifications
  • Represents MCL to major customers, government agencies, shareholders and the public
  • Understands the scope of MCL processes
  • Provides the resources necessary to meet quality assurance objectives to assure confidence in MCL results
  • Reviews technical reports from other departments
  • Ensures equipment is maintained and calibrated, reporting any deficiencies in the appropriate manner
  • Ensures all MCL personnel are adequately trained for the duties to which they may be assigned
  • Serves as technical consultant to Master Metal, Minerva Operations and other plants and divisions
  • Works with other plants and divisions in problem solving activities
  • Maintains current job descriptions and performs employee reviews
  • Maintains records and manages all aspects of testing activities including writing and approving material process related procedures
  • Oversees quality, standard pricing, customized quotations and invoicing for tests performed.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in engineering or physical sciences
  • At least five years' experience managing a group of technicians in a NADCAP certified MCL
  • A career marked with positions of increasingly responsible positions.
  • Hands on experience in a metallography laboratory dealing with ferrous or Ni/Co based alloys.
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel, Photoshop, Image Analysis and databases.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Hands on experience in a melt shop chemistry laboratory using LECO, XRF, OES, ICP-AE and GF-AAS test equipment.
