Assistant Professor of Surgery - Transplant Support and Metabolic Health

Position Overview:
The Department of Surgery seeks a full-time academic surgeon with a unique background in clinical nutrition, metabolism, and minimally invasive surgery to support the specialized needs of patients undergoing and recovering from solid organ transplantation. This position is designed for a surgeon-scientist with demonstrated expertise in metabolic care and a commitment to surgical innovation, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Primary Responsibilities:
* Transplant Surgical Support and General Surgery Care:
Provide comprehensive general surgery services, including minimally invasive procedures, to patients with a history of transplantation. This includes preoperative and postoperative surgical management with close coordination with transplant medicine teams to address the complex metabolic and immunologic needs of this population.

* Organ Procurement Involvement:
Participate in the organ procurement process in coordination with the transplant team and regional organ procurement organizations.

* Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Leadership:
Serve as a departmental resource and institutional leader in the integration of clinical nutrition and metabolic optimization into surgical care plans, with an emphasis on high-risk transplant patients. Contribute to patient care protocols aimed at improving nutritional status and overall surgical outcomes.

* Patient-Facing Clinical Service:
Engage in a minimum of 35 hours per week of direct patient-facing clinical activity within the University of Minnesota academic medical center.
* Research and Academic Development:

Pursue a program of scholarly inquiry aligned with the candidate's interests in surgical outcomes, clinical nutrition, metabolism, and patient-centered care. Dedicated research time and institutional support will be provided to enable contributions to peer-reviewed literature and national presentations.

* Teaching and Mentorship:
Contribute to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, particularly in the areas of minimally invasive surgery and nutrition in surgical care.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

* M.D. or equivalent degree
* Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency
* Fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery
* Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Surgery
* Demonstrated research productivity and commitment to academic surgery
* Certification or eligibility for CNSC (Certified Nutrition Support Clinician)

Preferred Attributes:

* Experience with or training in organ procurement protocols
* Publication record in surgical outcomes, metabolic care, and/or health systems innovation
* Evidence of engagement in national surgical or nutrition societies

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: This position is dually employed by the University of Minnesota Medical School and by University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP). Total full time compensation is $350,000.

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
