Position Summary: The Principal, Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and improving a variety of machining and assembly processes, new technology, and full production lines at SIG SAUER's firearm facilities. Emphasis will be placed on CNC, machining, and assembly of precision firearm components utilizing clearly defined technical drawings and interchangeable parts. The position will focus on implementing new and breakthrough technology for manufacturing processes with a strong emphasis on planning, capital procurement, and cost justification. In addition, this position will require execution of manufacturing feasibility, quality planning, and corrective action for internal quality concerns while leading cross functional teams.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Expert in determining manufacturing processes for new and breakthrough firearm product designs while providing budgetary estimates for equipment, tools, gages, and production rate. Considered to be subject matter expert in this area.
  • Use project management techniques for multiple projects to procure tooling and equipment for new products to meet launch timelines and cost targets.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Project scope includes entire production lines involving major capital investments and associated plant infrastructure.
  • Assume responsibility for achieving the cost, productivity, and quality goals for multiple production lines while working with cross functional teams to achieve goals.
  • Generate annual cost savings plan for areas of responsibility via formal cost savings analysis using established procedures.
  • Generate detailed process drawings, quality control plans, operator and set-up work instructions, set-up sheets, and production routings using SIG Agile product life cycle database. Work will focus on NPI (New Product Introduction) and new/breakthrough manufacturing technology.
  • Evaluate and improve product designs for Manufacturability while applying GD&T and dimensional stack-ups.
  • Provide expert consultation in one or more areas for the design, development, and implementation of technical systems and manufacturing processes. Areas of expertise required include but are not limited to:

    • High volume CNC machining
    • Machine and Tool Design
    • Assembly
    • Metal finishing
    • Automation
    • Robotics


  • Originate and develop new systems and processes and manage teams to successfully implement into full production.
  • Specify and procure new capital equipment in order to meet plant goals for quality, throughput, and cost. Generate detailed machine specifications or scope of work for turnkey projects or combined projects with both turnkey and in-house elements. Negotiate requirements with supplier. Projects will focus on cutting edge technology.
  • Plan, debug, and execute turnkey runoffs per SIG SAUER machine specification requirements including raw material and gages.
  • Recommend and implement new and breakthrough technology to improve quality of products, and/or procedures and the output and quality of manufacturing processes.
  • Work closely with product research and development engineers to enable production of new and cutting-edge products.
  • Resolve quality issues related to product and processes using statistical methods for entire production lines. Apply gage R&R, bias, dimensional stack-ups, control plan methodology, and GD&T. Advanced certification for Shainin Red X and/or Six Sigma required. Work will focus on quality planning for NPI and new/breakthrough manufacturing technology.
  • Perform as technical leader and resource to co-workers while actively mentoring less experienced Engineers. Recommend training and seminars for the Manufacturing Engineering group.
  • Provide consultation on complex projects and is a top-level contributor and specialist.
  • Place requisitions to order components for new and existing automated machines based on engineering BOMs.
  • Design and detail tooling, gages, and work holding systems from concept through production.
  • Keep designs simple and cost-effective.
  • Maintain schedule milestones.
  • Lead PPI efforts.
  • Update and revise drawings as needed.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Education/Experience & Skills:



  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering and 10+ years of previous experience.
  • In depth knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ASME Y14.5M-2009.
  • Must be able to demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and monday.com. Must be an expert in SOLIDWORKS and using data analysis programs.
  • Good working knowledge of materials and heat-treating processes.
  • Possess experience in evaluating, building, and troubleshooting manufacturing processes, machinery, and production lines.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
  • Overall, must be able to work in a team, lead, plan, and execute multiple projects. Quality of work must be very high. Written and verbal communication of complicated subjects is required.
  • Must be able to rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Organization of documentation and record keeping shall be to a high standard. Skilled at the used of Gantt charts and formal project management techniques.
  • Possess a wide degree of creativity and latitude.


Working Conditions:



  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. Security Mandates.
