Summary/Objective:

Perform wide range upholstery functions. Including, but not limited to; measuring, fitting, stapling, gluing, repairing and binding materials to manufacture furniture. Responsible for manufacturing and repairing product while upholding quality standards. Upholsterers manufacture furniture by utilizing hand, power tools, as well as knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods

Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Essential Functions:

  1. Attach bindings or apply solutions to edges of cut material to prevent raveling.
  2. Attach fasteners, grommets, buttons, buckles, ornamental trim, and other accessories to covers or frames, using hand tools.
  3. Build furniture up with loose fiber stuffing, cotton, felt, and/or foam padding to form smooth rounded surfaces.
  4. Design upholstery cover patterns and cutting plans, based on sketches, customer descriptions, or blueprints.
  5. Discuss upholstery fabrics, colors, and styles with customers, and provide cost estimates.
  6. Draw cutting lines on material following patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints, using chalk, pencils, paint, or other methods.
  7. Examine furniture frames, upholstery, springs, and webbing to locate defects.
  8. Fit, install, and secure material on frames, using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, and/or staples.
  9. Interweave and fasten strips of webbing to the backs and undersides of furniture, using small hand tools and fasteners.
  10. Make, restore, and/or create custom upholstered furniture, using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods.
  11. Measure and cut new covering materials, using patterns and measuring and cutting instruments, following sketches and design specifications.
  12. Operate sewing machines or sew upholstery by hand to seam cushions and join various sections of covering material.
  13. Read work orders and apply knowledge and experience with materials in order to determine types and amounts of materials required to cover work pieces.
  14. Remove covering, webbing, padding, and/or defective springs from work pieces, using hand tools such as hammers and tack pullers.
  15. Sew rips or tears in material, or create tufting, using needles and thread.

Other Key Responsibilities:

  1. Perform all responsibilities as may be assigned by management.
  2. Stretch webbing and fabric, using webbing stretchers.
  3. Maintain records of time required to perform each job.
  4. Adjust or replace webbing, padding, and/or springs, and secure them in place.

Working Conditions:

  1. Primarily working indoors, shop environment.
  2. May stand for several hours at a time.
  3. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  4. Repetitive use of hands to operate hand tools and pull fabric.
  5. Exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration
  6. Prolonged exposure to noise - proper PPE required

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities upon hiring.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The team member must frequently lift and/or move items over 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, and the expected work hours are 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday; weekend and overnight work could also become necessary.

Travel:

No travel is required for this position.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Manufacturing experience

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • The ability to find solutions to unexpected issues is valuable.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
