The Natural Resources Group is a global team with bankers around the world. The group has a significant presence with offices in New York, Houston, Toronto, Calgary, London, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires, among others. The group covers Metals & Mining, Chemicals, Power & Utilities, and Energy (including Alternative/Renewable Energy, Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, & Oilfield Services).
How You Will Fulfill Your Potential
The associates at Goldman Sachs gain exposure to the firms businesses and expanded knowledge of the investment banking industry, as they develop key analytical, communications, marketing and sales skills. Associates organize and prepare presentations, which explain industry trends, assess clients situations to provide the necessary financial advice, and recommend strategies to meet client goals. Additionally, associates coordinate teams of tax advisors, attorneys, and bankers for various transactions; lead due diligence processes and actively participate in the negotiations of legal documentation. From maintaining client communication to helping Goldman Sachs structure client transactions, our associates are a vital part of Goldman Sachs banking teams. Position Summary The Associate Geologist / Geoscientist will be a key member of Goldman Sachs A&D (Acquisitions & Divestitures) Team and work closely with the firm's corporate finance team. This position will provide advanced geological / geoscience technical support for the A&D Team and requires strong proficiency in subsurface geological practices, geological understanding of the major US Lower 48 basins, and basic economic principles in order to provide services for a variety of clients within the energy sector. General knowledge of key basins / plays outside the US Lower 48 is a plus. Key roles and responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Provide technical diligence support and inputs for modeling efforts related to energy (upstream, midstream, OFS) mergers, acquisitions, divestments, and capital market transactions
- Identification and understanding of key geological drivers for well performance, well spacing patterns, and base / upside zones & inventory
- Ability to evaluate and analyze key well design & completion trends at both the operator and basin level using both public & private data
- Develop detailed presentation materials (e.g. key geological maps, cross sections, etc.) across various basins in the US Lower 48 (e.g. Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken, SCOOP/STACK, Haynesville, Appalachia, Gulf of America, etc.)
- Understanding of key technical and financial assumptions driving valuation and economic modeling
- Implementing methods to improve and automate workflows
- Prepare both internal and external technical materials to be used to for pitch books, mandates, and Confidential Information Memorandums / data room presentations
- Contribution and participation in both internal and external presentations
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geology or Earth Science (or other relevant technical disciplines)
- 3+ years of investment banking A&D / technical experience; OR 5+ years of technical experience in Geology / Geosciences at an Oil & Gas Operator
- Operations and Business Development experience at an Operator is a plus
- MBA a plus, but not essential
- Technical knowledge and expertise across the US Lower 48 and other emerging plays within the oil and gas industry; General knowledge of key basins / plays outside the US Lower 48 is a plus
- High level of discretion dealing with confidential matters
- Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to set priorities
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- History of outstanding academic and professional achievement
- Software Skills: ESRI Applications (ArcGIS, ArcMap), IHS Petra, Kingdom, Spotfire, Enverus (PRISM), Wood Mackenzie (Lens), Microsoft Office. (Experience with economic softwares e.g. Aries, ComboCurve, etc. a plus, but not essential)
